“Lived up to expectations on being luxury and clean”

Grea hotel which exceeded expectations in terms of comfort (really lovely bed), style and cleanliness. Staff were great and attentive. On hearing we were celebrating a special birthday, we received a complimentary bottle of champagne in our room. First class. Only negs - bit noisy but that can be said for anywhere in NY and could benefit from having tea and coffee facilities in room.

“Lovely, Lovely, Lovely”

Hotel is small boutique with very personal service. I have no complains as everything a perfect!! Area is nice and safe, close to the park, the MET, Subway stations and fab restaurants.

“A haven in NYC”

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this lovely hotel. It lived up to all expectations. The staff were uniformly pleasant and helpful. Whilst the restaurant was not cheap for breakfast the food was exceptional and considering it costs almost as much to eat bad food was well worth it. The only minor gripe I would have is that the walls are definitetly not sound proof but it is an older building. The comfort of the room and the truly great bathroom (no bath but I am a shower person anyway and hate showering in a bath) more than made up for it.

“Not quite as expected”

Undoubtedly a very smart location in Upper Manhatten, you feel very safe coming and going at all hours. The hotel staff are very polite but not warm. They are helpful with requests for dining venues but don't offer any more than they need to, it's a bit take it or leave it. The foyer is simply a checking in area. There are no areas to sit and relax, no lounges etc. There is a bar area off to one side but it is contemporary, low level lighting and with no outlook. On the oppsite side of the lobby, Cafe Boulud is very good for dining. Good quality french cuisine, great for an elegant palate but if you are after something more simple then probably not an option. There is a business centre (room with two Mac pcs) and you are charged a daily rate irrespective of usage. I can't say I agree with this practise, especially when you only want internet access to find out information on a tourist attraction. You can only ask the concierge so much with a bit of eye rolling. There is also a Spa but we didn't use it so can't comment. Overall I think The Surrey is most suited to Business guests. As an English mother and daughter in New York we would have been better located somewhere like the St Regis, which is more central, offers lounge areas to people watch and take afternoon tea, a choice of restaurants, probably more suitable to the English tourist. We loved New York but The Surrey was a tad sterile for me but if you are uber chic and need no cossetting then could be a good option.

“Great comfort in NYC”

A wonderfully comfortable refurbished hotel ajacent to Central Park. A bit of a walk to the main action in Manhattan but the subway is close by. The room was beautifully clean and the beds are so comfortable. It was great to come back to after a long day in the city. We would definatley return. The room service and other general costs were higher than we expected, but I guess this is what you pay in NY. The staff were very friendly and attentive if required. The location was such that outside noise was minimal. No coffee/tea making facilities but this reflects the general rule for the more up market hotels. All in all, you should not be disappointed to have the opportunity to stay here. Fully recommended.

It does depend what you are looking for. Greenwich Village is a great place - its safe, has lots of character and you can chose from many places to eat out and enjoy the local music scene. Also we have stayed near Central Park which tends to be more expensive but it is quieter and less busy. For all the action you need to be around central Manhatten but there's more noise and its always very busy with theatre goers and shoppers etc. Again its your choice but wherever you go you will not run short of things to do!

There are so many places to dine out - try as many different restaurants as possible. The fixed price menus are good value but watch out for the charging of extras which can often double the bill. Eating out can be expensive but chose carefully and you will be ok.

“Fantastic Experience - would go back.”

--Boutique style hotel with upscale character situated in a quiet, clean, safe Upper East Side neighborhood, right on the park and next to the Met and the Guggenhiem. Great shopping, restaurants and bars nearby, but also a short commute to the other neighborhoods in Manhattan. We had a great experience and would definitely go back.
