A deco jewel in Lisbon

The hotel was constructed in art deco style in the 1940s, and - but for all the unobtrusive mod cons - you could be stepping back in time. The rooms are large for a city centre hotel, with stunning marble bathrooms and original (restored) Portuguese cork floors together with original (restored) furniture, created especially for the hotel. It's like stepping back in time for the service, too. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff, but we must name check Carlotta and Jefferson, both superb. The hotel is situated about ten minutes' walk up a broad leafy avenue out of the main city centre, so it's peaceful and quiet: our room overlooked the street, but we still slept with the window open and were not at all disturbed by any noise. Breakfast offered a vast choice, including fish and custard tarts! Locally, there are some splendid restaurants: just ask Carlotta for recommendations, she hit the nail on the head every time. And make sure to have one of Jefferson's Gin & Tonics: it's as much about watching him make it as it is about drinking it.
