Budget hotel for the price of an upscale hotel

We chose the Byword Blue as we were on a last minute trip to Ottawa, and it was the best rated hotel, with the highest price within my business budget (under 250$ - it was 149$) that had rooms available.
Bottom line up front: it's clean and acceptable (yet very dated and cheap decor) if all you want to do is sleep. That said, the bed is HORRIBLE (old, lumpy, uncomfortable - I have back problems, and had to take pain medication to make it through most of the night in some sort of comfort).
Breakfast: tasty but not very diversified.
Staff: polite and accommodating.
Decor: mis-matched, dated, budget.
Smell: horrible perfume smell.
No lounge area in upper price room (only kitchen chairs and a desk chair, no couch of lounge chair).
