“We went for this hotel based on the trust in the Riu brand, location, all inclusive basis and general good reviews. Overall the hotel was very good. “Rooms are small, half the size of other 5 star hotels. Bathroom is tiny, hardly any space. Hot water tends to run out after 10 minutes. Very unusual for a hotel of this reputation. Expedia also promised a $50 voucher for VIP access when I purchased the room. The hotel said this was not communicated to them, and Expedia said they cannot honour after I arrived at the hotel. “It was the most unpleasant stay in Sri Lanka and in general in several years traveling in Asia. The receptionist was totally unfriendly, just interested in getting us out out the hotel....and we understood why: some rooms were under renovation, so there was noise from early in the morning through the day. Nobody addressed us any excuse or recognize any kind of compensation for that. The guy at the restaurant was superb and hostyle, trying to reduce breakfast against what was our right to receive...

“This was our 2nd stay at the Asian Jewel. Our return was based on our previous experience which was lovely staff, good food, clean and spacious room. The location is out of town but was easy/cheap to get tuk tuks and being situated next to the lagoon allowed us to see lots of beautiful birds from our balcony. Would recommend and hope to return again.”
