The word Paleokastritsa literally means old little castle, named after Angelokastro, a Byzantine castle that stands on a hill over the village. This cosmopolitan resort stretches along a coastal road around stunning bays and a picturesque harbour where the excursion boats depart for the nearby, isolated beaches. At the end of the road, right after the main harbour, is the Monastery of the Virgin Mary that overlooks the village. The monastery hosts an interesting collection of post-Byzantine icons, books and other objects. There, you will discover precious icons from the 15th century.
