Description

Investigate New York’s industrial past and get a glimpse of its bright future as you explore the sprawl of dry docks, cranes and warehouses at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a historic federal shipyard that now employs 7,000 people. This is the only guided tour that explores this bustling industrial park.

Begin your excursion at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, where you find 3 floors of intriguing artefacts from the Yard’s former life, interspersed with exhibits about green building design, manufacturing companies and new technologies emerging from the facility today. With your curiosity piqued, meet your experienced guide and immerse yourself in the Yard’s most famous sites.

As you explore the Yard, hear the stories of sailors and shipyard workers that once filled this 300-acre (121 ha) waterfront complex. Learn about its rebirth as an economic powerhouse for New York City. It is home to hundreds of industrial companies that make a wide range of products, from countertops and underground train signs, to space suits and Hollywood films. Visit an active dry dock with a legacy that stretches all the way back to before the Civil War. Take a look inside the immense workshops where pieces of gargantuan ships were once made.

Moving between the past and the present, discover how these places are now serving the community in new ways as the Yard is reinvented as a hub for innovative makers and manufacturers in a wide range of industrial and creative sectors.

It was an excellent tour. The guide was knowledgeable and prepared with many photos. A bus was provided, so one could see quite a bit of the expansive Navy Yard.
