Description

Delve into centuries of Christian heritage with a half-day exploration of Rome's hidden religious sites. Discover underground treasures, hear about holy relics that have drawn pilgrims to the city for millennia, and see landmarks where major moments in Christian history took place.

Kick off your exploration at the Basilica of San Clemente, a fascinating church built over time in 3 separate levels. Hear how the earliest portions of the church were discovered as you tour the 2 underground floors and get a close-up look at the Altar of Mithras from the first century.

Continue on to the ancient basilica of the Santi Quattro Coronati, dedicated to the memory of 4 anonymous saints and martyrs. See the extraordinary frescoes that were uncovered here in 2002, which represent the zodiac, the four seasons, the liberal arts and King Solomon.

Your guide shares facts about the Emperor Constantine and Pope Sylvester as you enter the Church of Saint Sylvester the First, where the forged document The Donation of Constantine claims that Constantine the Great transferred authority over Rome and much of the Roman Empire to the Pope.

Your final stop is at the Papal Archbasilica of St John in the Lateran. As the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome (the pope), this ancient place of worship ranks above all other Catholic churches, including St Peter's Basilica. Here, you can walk up the white marble Holy Stairs, said to be the steps that Christ climbed during his trial before Pontius Pilate.
