L’unica cosa positiva di questo albergo è la posizione. Per il resto, non si tratta di un hotel “old fashion” bensì ti una struttura trascurata e mal tenuta

The Cathedral Gate Hotel is older than the West Gate leading into the Canterbury Cathedral! It's old, and proudly displays its age. Anyone staying there must want to enter into the atmosphere is medieval Canterbury, and enjoy the experience of crossing from building to building on the rooftop, and being right smack in the middle of the ancient city.

The hotel has it's own charme, directly located at the Cathedral, nicely polished up (since our last visit in 2007), offers very friendly service. The slightly complicated distribution of rooms is owed to the old historic building. No direct car parking in the vicinity, but unloading an loading possible. We sure will come back

We love this hotel and came back to stay here again. The staff, quirky rooms and great breakfast are all a real plus. Unfortunately we were given a room at the front of the hotel and the Friday night revellers kept up a steady stream of noise, shouting etc until 4am. Needless to say, if you're going to stay here ask for a room at the back.

We loved the quirky nature of the hotel. The age of the property meant there was a distinct slope to the floors- but for one night it was fine. Strange to have to walk across a rooftop to get to the bedrooms - another quirk. Canterbury is a lovely city and we certainly would come again. We recommend The Foundry as a place to have a drink and also The Cooks Tale for a modern twist on Indian food.

Comfortable clean rooms in a very central location. One room overlooking the cathedral was quite small but nevertheless good value for money. The larger room was also warm, comfortable and clean. Staff were friendly and Continental breakfast was set us up for the day. We would certainly return.

A wonderful stay in a hotel built in the 1400s
This is one of the most unique places I have ever stayed. Certainly one of the oldest hotels I’ve ever had the pleasure of staying in. Wonderfully quirky, centuries-old, neatly appointed and looking out over a wonderful city square and shops on a cobblestone street. Built into the gate of the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral. We were fortunate enough to have a room that looked directly out over the cathedral itself. Staff was wonderful and accommodating. Monica in particular was a pleasure and was extremely cheerful and conversational. Breakfast looking out over the square was quite nice. Highly recommended!

Centre of Canterbury in comfort
Lovely stay right in the middle of Canterbury. Difficult to find but everybody in the Hotel were excellent. I think it was Rob who recommended some excellent restaurants for evening meals. Breakfast was lovely - we had the full English, rooms very clean and well presented.

we really enjoyed the night that we stayed a Cathedral in Gate. Location is perfect if you want to do a quick visit through Canterbury. We loved the out door terrace area. Staff was super friendly. Rooms were very clean

History inside and out
Wonderful very old funky hotel with a view of the cathedral. The room was small but perfect for the two of us. We navigated down the hallways and up the stairs to our quiet peaceful impeccable room appropriately named Tranquility. The hotel is perfectly situated next to the cathedral gate and in east walking distance to shops, punts, museums, restaurants and monuments. The owners and staff were attentive and courteous and kind.

Positive remarks 1 Location right next to the cathedral literally. 2 Partial view of cathedral from some rooms. 3 Very good water pressure in shower. Negative 1 The carpets throughout (including the our room room) were shabby and stained. The parking is a far way off. The town’s main area is a closed street, open to pedestrians, however, hotel guests could drive up /out for luggage transfer (only 5 min). Unfortunately when we left they were working on the entrance rd and were unable drive up, therefore had to walk the luggage back to the car. 2 We got locked in the hotel one night. Each guest gets a key to open/ close the main door to the hotel, however, if the lock is turned too far over it locks in and someone from outside has to then unlock the door with a key. The lock then has to be reset by staff to ensure no one gets locked in the building.*****Fire hazard 3 The windows in our room were broken and could not close. We had big black flies coming and going throughout our stay. I only realized the last day when we were leaving that the window has a gap at the top and that’s why we had flies. 4 The wall near this window had the paint completely cracking and was separated from the wall due to water damage probably sustained over a period of time from this window being broken and not repaired. 5 The bed had a slated wood frame with a cheap mattress that left us aching after only 1 night. I would stay somewhere else.

Wonderful and Quirky
This hotel, built around 1430, is very quirky and wonderful. Debbie, the proprietor, was most helpful in suggesting day trips. We enjoyed each staff member. This hotel is not for the faint-hearted or those carrying more than one bag: it's very old, so the sloping floor are to be considered. We really enjoyed our 4 nights.

We booked a room here to be a convenient way to drive into London to visit our son. The hotel has lots of nooks and few straight lines, but that adds to its character. It's super convenient in the pedestrian zone of central Canterbury and the cathedral itself around the corner. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Would book again.

Highly recommend
This is a quirky, charming hotel in the heart of historic Canterbury. It took more work to get checked into this hotel. We were allowed to bring our car into the pedestrian only street to drop off luggage, but it was difficult. And there are so very many steps and stairs to get to the rooms. But, the staff are all so nice and the overall experience more than made up for the extra work. Also, they serve one of the best breakfasts we had on our 3 week trip. And the bottle service was a delightful surprise.

This property was built in 1438. To me that was amazing! It was a quirky place located right next to the Canterbury Cathedral. I really liked that it was old with interesting features and uneven floors. I totally missed reading in the description that there were no elevators. Thank goodness a kind gentleman was able to take our luggage upstairs and eventually to our room. From the lobby, we had to go outside to a little courtyard and up some more stairs to get to our tiny, little room. The room only had a fan (no air conditioning) but we slept with the window raised and the fan on and it was quite comfortable even in July. We were on a high floor so felt safe in leaving the window open. The bathroom was updated and very nice and our twin beds were very comfortable. The location was great for visiting the Cathedral and walking around the sights of Canterbury. We even got to attend a service at the Cathedral with a Boy's Choir from Germany performing! The Pottery Shop was right across the street. I remember it from a visit in Canterbury about 12 years ago. Their pottery is amazing. The next morning we had complimentary breakfast in the most adorable room overlooking the square below. The church bells were ringing and it truly was a magical! I just love the feel of Canterbury and this hotel just added to the charm of the city! I would definitely stay here again!

Dear Brenda,Thank you so much for leaving such a wonderful review of your recent stay with us. It means a lot to us !The hotel dates back to 1438 and is older than Christchurch gate itself. It was originally built for pilgrims to stay in. The downside of the hotel is of course the stairs but all staff who works here are more than happy to carry luggage to and from the rooms.
