September Stay at The Bear Den
Generally speaking we had a nice stay here, but there were a few things we were unaware of, the first being that The Bear Den is located in a resort. We were thinking it was a bit more tucked away and remote. Regardless, we had a very peaceful stay and the proximity to the parks/downtown is ideal. This spot would be perfect for a family with kids. We also didn't realize just how much taxidermied animals were part of the decor: there were considerably more heads and animal displays than in the listing photos. Might not bother some folks but we're city dwellers so it was a little startling and spooky, especially in the dark. Other than a few cobwebs and the wifi network being listed incorrectly on the info. sheets (we figured it out), it was a nice stay with perfectly adequately accommodations, including clean bathrooms, comfortable beds and spacious bedrooms. Thank you!

Nice Stay
We went to the Starved Rock, Buffalo and Matthiessen parks. Went to Ottawa, took river cruise. Enjoyed dinner in downtown Utica. Learned about the history of the area. Enjoyed Grand Bear resort and villa. Will go again.

Comfortable arrangements to visit Starved Rock!
A well-appointed and well-furnished house to use as a base to explore Starved Rock and other nearby State Parks. Mark is a very thoughtful host, and the welcome basket of bananas and muffins were a pleasant surprise! Located inside the Grand Bear Resorts, it is walkable to everything the resort has to offer. We will be back in summer, when the resort will be fully functioning.

Such a great place!
We spent a wonderful weekend in this beautiful place, we were received very hospitably, We were surprised that owner prepared some snack and water for us, on the last day we were allowed to stay as long as we want. Very nice place! I highly recommend!

Threat place
We loved everything about our stay. Or a bit disappointed that we were not able to use the fireplace however, we understand now with the history of the fire. Would be nice if the listing was changed, the order more accurately reflect that as we were looking forward to a fireplace. Otherwise everything was great. Left our stay.

Easy Weekend away
Mark offered quick communication and nice extras for us. Check in and out was super easy. Location is great for trail walking and nature viewing. Enhanced cleaning of common areas would be nice. As well as toppers for mattresses. They are very firm- some may like that tough! It was a girls weekend and we hope to stay with Mark again.

Lovely stay
This villa was exactly what we were looking for. Close to the state parks, clean, easy check in/check out. Host had muffins and fresh bananas out on the table when we arrived. Check out was easy, didn't require too many cleaning tasks or procedures like some rentals do. Definitely would stay again.

We love the Bears Den!
This is our second summer coming back and spending a month at Mark's place. We love it. It's always clean- FULLY stocked- and we love the location within Grand Bear- wonderful end unit with tons of wildlife. It's always relaxing and so easy to get to everything in Utica/Ottawa/LaSalle and obviously the state parks. The villa is incredibly spacious and the kids love that there are tv's in both bedrooms so they can take breaks upstairs and not have to share! We look forward to summer number three here next year!

Fantastic owners and townhouse
The owners are amazing and the townhouse has everything you need. Dishwashing soap and sponges, coffee and creamer, paper towels etc. most places don’t include that. Owners left us muffins, frag bananas and a personalized note. Completely amazing. The only two cons are more of an fyi for consideration before you book if they are important to you 1) beds are extra firm mattresses in case that’s a problem for you 2) Pool/water park are not included. Resort wanted to charge $140 (for three people) per day for pool privileges. I just went to the public pool for $3 a person and we had a great time.

Great Location for hiking
Mark had all the extras covered. There were muffins and bananas on the table, bottled water, coffee and many more things available for our use. The condo was clean and the area was very quiet. Across the street was the trail head for St Louis Canyon. Starved Rock Visitor center and many trail heads were less than 2 miles away. Matthieson State Park was close too and had great hiking as well. Our favorite local restaurant, Palermo Pizza, was in the town of Peru. About 15 minutes away. This property is in a great location for hiking.

Peaceful place
I love how peaceful the back patio was. Perfect for morning or afternoon read. The house is great and spacious with a nice coffee bar. The location is kind of hidden away but very close ride to Starved Rock and downtown Utica. Perfect!

Everything you could want, and more!
This property was perfect for our family trip to Starved Rock. The property exceeded my expectations. The space has everything-extra pillows, blankets, towels, kleenex, muffins, bottled water, and all the kitchen gadgets and utensils you could need. The space was well cleaned and very cozy. The location was perfect, we spent the morning hiking, came back for lunch, then headed out on another hike in the afternoon. It is 15 minutes to Ottawa for fun food and treats. Mark answered all of our questions right away. My kids are already excited about going back!

Can’t wait to go back!
We can’t wait to go back. My husband and I wanted to go to Starve Rock for the first time kid free. It was amazing and this was right around the corner from it. The owner answered my questions and got us muffins for our stay. This was super sweet. We can’t wait to come back with the kids.

Property fine. Needs a good spring cleaning up. A few ants and spiders. Could have been vacuumed better. Plenty of towels, beddinggood. TV wi-fi good. Location great. Very quiet and relaxing. Bottled water, bkfst cupcakes, fruit all appreciated. Would stay again if we visit Starved Rock again.

won’t go back
Bathroom floors were dirty and had hair on it. Cobwebs and spider eggs not cleaned up. Pictures showed what appeared to be fireplaces, a cabinet with artificial flames was put on front of the fireplace. Generally it felt not a thorough cleaning. Very loud neighbors you could here thu walls.

Perfect for Starved Rock visit
Very quiet and plenty of space. The owner always responded quickly. He even left muffins, bananas and lots of bottled water. Only little disappointment is that the gas fireplaces aren't functioning anymore due to lack of parts. There are electric ones to at least give the ambiance. Very relaxing stay.

Amazing place
