  • Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996.

We always enjoy our stay. The unit didn't have a broom or dust pan. So we got them and gifted it because the hardwood floors throughout requires sweeping in order to deminsh debris tranfer to beds since there are no rugs. I recommend at least putting washable rugs beside the beds on one side. In units with no carpet have cleaners put lots of emphasis on sweeping with dust attractive brooms or dust brooms before mopping. And to always check top dishes to see if any have settled between cleanings. Lastly, never assume that a made up bed has not been slept in, because I truly believe this happened. As a guest, I am usually prepared to do some additional cleaning or sanitisying anyways. Therefore, it wasn't a complaint just an observation. In guest bedroom where my granddaughter was the bed had black hair. I knew by the strands they were from an animal (dog or cat), so I removed all of it and washed and put it back. I know from my past stay this was not the norm and I am sure it won't be in the future. As a guest with pets, none black though, I knew what I was looking at. Guest should never put pets in beds in case the next guest is allergic. Therefore, I am not complaining, I'm just sharing that guest should be considerate of others. Again Thanks, I look forward to our upcoming stays in Oct & Nov.

Wasn’t able to stay at the property because it was double booked for the weekend. Had to find somewhere else to stay on short notice.
