Originally part of a grand Victorian ‘gentleman's residence', this charming stone-built cottage has been thoughtfully reimagined as a home-away-from-home for those seeking both adventure and tranquillity. From its elevated vantage point, you are treated to views across to the iconic fells of Helm Crag and Stone Arthur, offering a daily reminder of the natural beauty that defines this National Park.
The cottage features a unique ‘upside-down' layout. Ascend the traditional stone steps to the welcoming porch, where you can pause with a morning coffee and soak in the fresh Lakeland air. Inside, the spacious open-plan layout blends period character with modern conveniences to create a space that feels warm, comfortable and lived-in.
After a day of exploring the rugged fells or strolling around the lake, the living area provides the ultimate setting for relaxation. Sink into comfortable seating beside the crackling log burner, perhaps with a book or a local film on the Smart TV. The large dual-aspect windows frame the ever-changing Lakeland light, making it the perfect spot to watch the sun set behind the mountains. The galley kitchen, though compact, is expertly equipped with everything you need to prepare delicious meals using the finest Cumbrian produce.
Sleeping arrangements are tucked away on the ground floor, offering a calm and quiet haven for a restful night's sleep. With two beautifully appointed double bedrooms, Ben Place Cottage is an ideal choice for two couples or a small family with older children. Every detail has been considered to ensure your stay is as seamless as it is memorable, from the convenience of private off-road parking to the sun-drenched gravelled patio, perfect for alfresco dining as the evening shadows stretch across the valley.
ACCOMMODATION SUMMARY: Please note that the cottage has an 'upside-down' layout, featuring external stone steps and a secure handrail that leads to the main entrance on the upper floor. Further internal stairs provide access to the lower-ground-floor bedrooms and bathrooms.
Upstairs Living/Dining Room: A bright and spacious first-floor open-plan space featuring a two-seat sofa and two armchairs, a fantastic log burner, Smart TV, DVD player, a stereo and a portable Bluetooth speaker. Dual-aspect windows offer views to the courtyard garden and the tops of the fells beyond. Kitchen: A well-appointed galley-style kitchen is located off the living area. Fully equipped with an electric oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, slow cooker, and an air fryer. Note that a washer/dryer combo and the freezer are located in the utility room on the lower ground floor.
Downstairs: Bedroom 1: A peaceful double bedroom featuring a charming dressing-room alcove and its own private en-suite. Please note: The en-suite bedroom is 6’11” wide, providing approximately 11” clearance on either side of the bed. En-suite Bathroom: Serving Bedroom 1, this private bathroom features a bath with a shower over, a toilet, a washbasin and a heated towel rail. Bedroom 2: A comfortable and stylishly decorated double bedroom with bedside tables and easy access to the main family bathroom. Family Bathroom: Modern and bright, featuring a bathtub with an overhead shower, perfect for a long soak after a day on the fells, a toilet, a washbasin, and a heated towel rail. Utility Room: A practical utility space accessed through the en-suite bathroom, housing a freezer, washer-dryer, and the central heating boiler.
Outside: Garden Area: A private gravelled seating area with garden furniture, plus a covered wooden porch with bench seating at the top of the entrance steps. Parking: Off-street parking for up to two cars. Important: There is an unfenced lightwell between the gravel garden and the building. For this reason, parents should consider whether this property is suitable for their young children.
THINGS TO NOTE: Maximum Occupancy: The cottage sleeps a maximum of 4 guests across two double bedrooms. The double beds are fixed doubles; they cannot be split into singles. Pet Policy: We regret that pets are not permitted at this property. Child Policy: Children and Infants are welcome; however, parents should consider whether this property is suitable for them, as it features an unfenced light well with a drop of approximately 1.8m, which provides light to the downstairs bedrooms. A Travel cot is available on request; however, a high chair is not provided. Bedding for the cot is also not provided; please bring these items with you. Check-in/Check-out: Check-in is available from 16:00, and we kindly request that guests depart by 10:00. Linen & Towels: Bed linen and bath mats are provided, along with tea towels in the kitchen. Guests are required to bring their own personal towels. Accessibility: Please note that the cottage has an 'upside-down' layout with external stone steps and a secure handrail leading to the main entrance on the first floor, and further internal stairs leading down to the lower-ground bedrooms and bathrooms. Smoking: This is a strictly non-smoking and non-vaping property. EV Charging: Charging electric vehicles from any of the property's electric sockets is strictly prohibited. The nearest EV charger is in Grasmere Village. Wood for the Fire: Please note that wood for the log burner is not provided. You can bring your own wood or purchase seasoned wood from the convenience store in Grasmere village. Home Shopping: Ben Place Cottage is serviced by home shopping from all major retail stores. There is a well-stocked convenience store in the village, too.
