I'm going to keep this simple because our long history of honest 5 star guest reviews speak for themselves, 155 in total! I have only withheld security deposit funds for a jacuzzi drain one other time in 8 years of owning my property with nearly constant guest use, which can be verified by VRBO. I do not make a habit of charging guests for damage that is not directly caused by the guest and if I did, this would definitely not be the first mention of it in my reviews over my long history as a host.
We service the jacuzzi before every single guest arrival and the water was verified clean and clear by both my jacuzzi tech and Ms. Mondragon upon her arrival to the house. I ask all of my guests to check the water clarity immediately upon arrival, which she herself did and confirmed the water was clean and clear. In addition, while many owner’s don’t feel it’s necessary, I send my spa tech out to check on the jacuzzi and add chemicals, if necessary, midweek when a guest stays a full week, which is exactly what happened in this case. On only the third day of Ms. Mondragon's stay my tech came by for our regular service and he let me know that the jacuzzi was very cloudy and there was a lot of sand/dirt from the yard on the bottom of the jacuzzi, as well as a thick film of heavy sunscreen on top of the water – both of which will affect water clarity. He was very surprised to see it in this condition considering he had just been there to service the jacuzzi three days prior. As Ms. Mondragon said in her review, I immediately offered to drain the jacuzzi and have it refilled with fresh water, but she refused. What she failed to add in her review is that she told me point blank “No, don’t bother to drain the jacuzzi mid-trip because it would likely just happen again as there are several young kids using it and you know how kids are”...her exact words!! I was apprehensive, but I didn’t want to infringe upon my guest’s privacy or wishes, so I allowed my tech to leave and not drain the jacuzzi, which was a mistake on my part. Upon returning to my property after check-out, my jacuzzi tech informed me that the number one reason for jacuzzi water to be in this bad of condition in just a few short days is when kids urinate in the water…all of which makes sense…heavy sunscreen, dirty/muddy feet in and out of the jacuzzi and yes…pee from very young kids that don’t want to get out of the warm water and use the bathroom. We just replaced the pump on the jacuzzi three months ago so the jacuzzi is performing well and we have had no other problems. We use the most respected jacuzzi service in Big Bear Lake, Olson’s Spas, which is the highest rated service company on the mountain.
As I said, if I constantly charged guests for false reasons it would be noted all through my guest reviews – which it is not! There is not one single mention of it in 158 reviews because I do not charge guests unless absolutely necessary! To put things in perspective I have hosted 47 guest parties this year alone and 97 guest parties in 2021. I did not make one single security deposit claim in all of that time for a jacuzzi drain or anything else, in 1.5 plus years, not one! Over 8 long years I have only made two jacuzzi drain claims and one claim when several of our pool table balls ended up in a child’s suitcase without the parent knowing. Again, this can be verified by VRBO. I am a big believer in honesty and taking responsibility for my actions, but unfortunately it seems as if Ms. Mondragon does not conduct herself in the same way. Instead, she made up false complaints like you can’t use the garbage disposal (I have never ever charged for a clogged sink or any other interior damage not once in 8 years), there is not enough counter space in a large galley kitchen and the couch is old and uncomfortable, which is all untrue. The couch is super comfy, only a few years old and as you can see from my interior pictures, there is plenty of counter space. The house is very clean inside and out, centrally located in a great neighborhood, directly across from the lake and has tons of fun amenities, just like Ms. Mondragon and my strong review history note. I am a very hard working and consciences host that takes good care of my guests. I take great pride in providing a clean, well maintained home with a proven strong guest satisfaction history. Funny thing, the last correspondence I had with Ms. Mondragon (before she knew I was charging her) was “your home is lovely.” I’m not sure how that suddenly changed with no other complaints given during her stay and she even sent me a picture of her young daughter on our tree swing. We had nothing but positive communication during her entire stay.
