In the plains of Venezuela (Los Llanos) stay with Don Ramon and his family on their cattle ranch, Rancho Grande. He was one of the first to open his home to travelers, and he's the real thing. The ranch is located in Modulos de Mantecal, several hours north of the town of Mantecal, closer to Puerto Nutria. Rooms are simple, most are hammocks; all have shared bath. Treks out onto the plains on horseback or with Don Ramon in his pickup will include spotting anaconda, sloths, anteaters, capybara and cows of course. On other outings by boat you might spot the pink river dolphin. Really. This is Discovery Channel/Animal Planet stuff. Be sure to enjoy local llanera or joropo music. It's amazing what can be done with a harp!
