My wife and family have been vacationing on Smith Lake for years. This year, our standard VRBO was already rented out and our dates were locked, so we decided to try out “Respite by the Lake” as it was basically next door to our standard VRBO. I must admit, the pictures of the property are amazing, and along with the 2-story dock, we were sold. Pre-arrival communication with the owner was fine and typical of what I am used to with other VRBO rentals. Upon our arrival, I was quite surprised at the grandiose full wall of windows of the great room. Further exploring revealed very expensive taste of the person that decorated the home. After our initial inspection, we headed down to the dock. As mentioned in previous negative reviews, the steps to the dock were natural rock and not well lit after sundown. Upon arriving at the dock, we were shocked at the filth of the enclosed air conditioned room, as well as the mildew all over the decking. We grew up in the country, so we weren’t that put off. However, the stairs leading down to the lower level of the dock were rotten and dangerous. Filthy and full of spider webs I can deal with….the safety of my family is a no-fly zone. That first evening, we were excited to use the outdoor fire pit to make s’mores, but as previously mentioned in other reviews, there was no seating available and the deck was full of cobwebs, leaves, and ash from previous guests. We decided against that and decided to have a movie night instead. As mentioned in the amenities, the property has “Internet” and “TV”. What it does not mention is the lack of cable/satellite service. This would normally not be an issue as I stream all my entertainment normally, however, the internet was dreadfully slow. Streaming Netflix was not possible as the feed was constantly buffering. Additional negatives were multiple light bulbs burnt out, missing parts of the wall, open wiring knockouts, and a filthy (but expensive) cooktop. The ice maker was not working and full of trash. As we were driving away after our stay, I noticed the for sale sign in the front yard…I guess that should have clued me in. As my title mentions, if you want to stay in an expensive appearing home, but don’t care about the details, this home might be ok for you. I can assure you there are nicer rentals on Smith Lake within this price range…and I would recommend you pass on this property. PS- Pontoon rental for Dustin Point Marina was great!
