  • This is an updated historic building in the fantastic Sherman Hills area just up from downtown.

    Located on 18th Street, the property sits at the edge of Sherman Hill and the Drake/University corridor, one SE of Drake University. The area is a mix of historic, tree-lined residential blocks, student-oriented rental housing, and renovated multi-unit buildings. Walking distance to local cafes, bars, and restaurants, hospitals, and a short walk or bike ride to downtown Des Moines and the East Village entertainment and dining district. The vibe is urban + residential with frequent foot traffic during the school year and easy access to downtown events and cultural attractions.

    Public transit: Des Moines Area Regional Transit (DART) operates several bus routes serving downtown and the university corridor; downtown has DART Central Station for transfers. Biking & walking: very walkable for campus, downtown and nearby restaurants; good bikeability with dedicated lanes on some nearby streets. Rideshare & taxis: widely available in downtown/University area for quick trips and airport transfers. Car: on-street parking and free lot; short drives to major city destinations. Regional rail: Des Moines currently lacks direct Amtrak passenger rail service — intercity rail requires travel to the nearest Amtrak-served station outside the city. Intercity bus: Greyhound/other intercity bus services operate from near downtown (short drive). Airport: Des Moines International Airport (DSM) is the nearest airport and is a short drive south of the city.

This small apartment was exactly what we needed for a quick trip to visit our son in Iowa, where he was interning for the summer. The location was excellent with convenient walking access to Smoky Row Coffee shop (coffee in the morning and ice cream at night....yum!). It was also right off the highway so zipping east to the Harvester Club where our son was working, or west into Des Moines to hit the Jordan Creek Mall was a breeze.Despite the record heat during the week we were there, the two in-window air conditioners did fine to keep the space comfortable. It was nice to have a full kitchen to be able to prepare a couple of meals instead of having to sink money into eating out the whole week.The mattress might be a little more firm than you are used to (it was for me), but that did nothing to prevent me from sleeping great all week. We experienced no issues at all, and would definitely stay again if we are ever back in the Des Moines area.

My overall experience was positive with the host, but I could not give the property itself a higher rating. The host was very nice, responsive, and worked with me when the property was not cleaned properly upon arrival. He also checked in to make sure things were going well. However, this property didn't seem completely ready for guests. As an older unit, I could tell some updates had been made. But the painted walls had cracks in them, the floor was slanted, the lower kitchen cabinets were open to the floor, and there were random bugs coming in from outside (perhaps through the window air conditioning units). The bed was hard and uncomfortable, but we used our own blankets from home to help with that.The building itself smelled bad and had cobwebs on the bannisters, making it creepy to hold on when walking up or down. Carrying luggage up took a lot of effort (and I'm pretty strong). The back of the building had old furniture sitting there (maybe waiting to be hauled away). The garbage dumpster also disappeared during our stay.During our time there, the entire street around the property was taken up and partially repaved. Although this was not the fault of the host, it made getting around via ride shares a bit more difficult. However, we were able to walk down a couple of blocks to get picked up/dropped off. The commute to Drake Stadium and a few other places was short (via ride share). However, nothing was really walkable except for a local coffee shop.
