Doris who was curt and demanding from her initial contact, was the Leader of five elderly women guests. She close to date was insistent since they lived in SC that they have an early check in. That there are now too few reliable cleaners working in HH especially on busy turnover Saturdays with them doing multiple properties was of No interest to Doris. When I was able to have our house cleaned first and ready by noon, Her mistaken use of our electronic door lock 4 number combination, she reversed so many times, the lock gave up and required a reset . How many wrong entries must one make before they consider rechecking the emailed code sent them? Should it happen 22 times? We are always available around 4 pm Saturdays but not at noon so their contact to us after their causing the lock to dysfunction needed a reset to begin again. No apologies from Doris who now appeared pretty silly to her friends and to us. Our contract specifies Anything not as it should be is to be addressed Immediately. If left until later or after departure, then it surely did not occur or was not meant to be dealt with and instead is used in a review to try to disable owners' ability to rent. This is who Doris was: no dishwasher was detached from its supports and unable to be used, no ovens were dirty but the main master bdrm and bthrm was a disgrace of dirty linens that a first wash could not return to usual cleanliness plus our carpet cleaner had to be used to freshen the room. In a post covid world, when we have all been through too much suffering, isn't it disappointing that some of us are not trying a little bit harder to be fair and mannerly and work towards worthwhile goals? Lastly even though southern properties do have insect spray regimens, the occasional dead bug does still cross the entrance spray threshold and it dies inside. While writing a review is one way to deal with that, isn't it more constructive just to pick it up and toss it back outside? Don't plague others with your Unhappiness, Doris. Colleen

Families with young children love the Lazy River and splash pads. Others enjoy the quiet time pool 2 blocks away in a scenic setting with loungers, umbrellas and a washroom with shower. The private beach 2 miles long is also a terrific escape from the madding crowd. Peace and spaciousness await back at the house. Colleen

Hi Lance - Thanks for detailing off island golf had better prices. Every course now is so busy, I think golf has reclaimed its popularity. In a covid world, we know the pleasure and wisdom of spending outdoors time with sun and exercise. Isn't HH the perfect escape for that? What a whirlwind visit you had taking in so much of the outlying area in addition to the island. For those who want to experience more than this 5 X12 mile gorgeous island rimmed by beaches and full of fun recreation and terrific eating, you are so right, that many additional interest points are only a 1-2 hr drive away. I do recommend for those who want to visit Charleston that they stay over one night to really be able to have a fuller experience. Plus the dark night roads back to HH especially when many are travelling are safer in daylight. And there is much island hopping here with connecting bridges to so many others. But HH is the Best! David - If our beds were all uncomfortable, wouldn't 14 years of rentals have revealed that before now? We actually early on replaced an expensive King tempurapedic mattress since our guests - and we - found it too hot. But since then, all other guests have been pleased. So why would 4 adults with such a choice of beds and extra sleeping spaces have been uncomfortable? The 10 miles of bike trails in the neighborhood have routes and maps Provided Clearly on the bulletin board in the laundry room. Naturally one does have to ride on our quiet neighborhood streets to access them. And our bikes are in good working order. With a tool kit provided if difficulties appear. If only a specific type of bike suits you, then bring it along rather than complain incessantly. Why not have contacted me about the bike trails rather than whine now as if you missed out on something important. The family who stayed 3 days after you left reviewed they had an Amazing Time mainly because they loved the bike trails - they found our maps and then the trails - and were on them most of their time here. The kitchen stove with 2 ovens and fast burner heat provides sturdier service than many single oven stoves and a much stronger fan hood exhaust. Were you unable to prepare meals on it? No you just prefer what you have elsewhere. How sad a time you must have had, not biking, not enjoying pools, not going to the beach, just tabulating negatives without noting the 20 X 14 kitchen was flooded in morning with the east sun streaming into the bay window eating area, the huge, private yard was covered with flowering shrubs, the house had tv's in the kitchen and den with the LR and DR left for games, reading and visiting. Likely in your midst of cataloguing your dislikes, you hadn't time to enjoy the large screened porch with a coffee and witness the birds and lagoon out back amidst the azaleas. If you wanted a no carpet house, you should have checked with me rather than complain when too late to solve. And it was bought in 2015, fyi. Lastly that you didn't choose to park in our 110 foot driveway in the Shade of our treed yard rather than in the Sun was why pine sap was on your car. Wasn't the poor attitude you arrived with really the cause of little enjoyment and such a litany of untruths? You commented early on that you come to HH a couple of times a year, yet you Still haven't found a place Suitable to return to. I guess that realization pretty much says what the cause of your complaining is. Consider sending a pre questionnaire to future rentals to provide owners your guest profile preview. Joan was the perfect guest, delighted to enjoy the house and the island's natural and man made offerings, helped coordinate issues with garbage pick up and was communicative about gardener and yard situation needing resolution, a very helpful set of eyes on Everything! Sadly guest Karolina’s Up Front absence of interest in details about the house’s space distribution only occurred Upon Arrival after midnight on the Saturday of Thanksgiving wkend after a very long drive with 3 children. She hadn’t asked a single accommodation question prior to her booking, only about internet speed, yet arriving tired and late, immediately became offensive – and inaccurate – in the dishonest details she provided. If one of 3 shower / bathtubs had been draining slowly – I hate that too – our cleaner is instructed when cleaning how to dissolve clogs to prevent this. If she had missed clearing that, there was both draino and Liquid Plumber in the laundry room cleaning product area open to guests. Or better still, choose 2 alternate locations to shower rather than all 5 of them taking turns, - or together? - Is not clear watching the undrained water rise in this one tub. Her wording to me: “The water that doesn’t drain in the master bathroom tub, so we all stood in 1/2 a foot of water while showering this morning.” Too bizarre. Hilton Head is filled with beauty and fun activities, and this is how they spend their time there? Whoa. This possibility was too crazy to contemplate even though the guest provided me these details – although she is too embarrassed to admit it and refers to my adding it as fiction. Why would I do that? If our busy house actually had been neglected with cobwebs, both ovens dirty, (I asked her to send me pictures: never happened), floors unclean, how could this house remain fully rented let alone well reviewed for 13 years including by many repeat guests? If this guest’s needs were to have a specific seating design for family tv viewing, why could she have not seen from the numerous, clear website pictures that this house either did or did not meet her needs? A Queen leather sofa, and three comfortable chairs and an ottoman works for other guests. What was her problem other than she wanted to rant? Or select a different property, please! The irony escaped her of spending Family Holiday Time complaining about bed arrangements unable to be changed - which are specifically detailed online - rather than IN ADVANCE reading and questioning if needed. Why to this negligent family holiday planner, was this The Fault of anyone other than Her? Let’s all try to Play Fair in a world already made miserable by covid to Accept Responsibility for Our Mistakes. Then there is the possibility that Blaming Others will potentially be lessened. Fortunately the majority of our guests are appreciative and reasonable. Our just departed Christmas guests said the garbage pick up for Friday did not occur and so he himself took their waste to the nearby waste center. How kind, how helpful. And he did not blame me for the inconvenience, but said he didn’t want the next guests’ holiday to start with others’ garbage there. Thank you, Chris, and Happy New Year! Colleen

With everything needed so close by our year round community, the mix of peacefulness close to activity provides a good mix. Hey OB - Thank you so much for appreciating openly the recommendations I make to guests along with the variety of activities I always send along. I want to be sure None of our guests ever say as they are leaving, "I wish I had known there was horseback riding, zip lining, art lessons, live theater, etc" when that can be so easily prevented with accurate information being offered and knowing your guests' interests. Kay, you wrote to me after 2 days praising the house, the organization and cleaning, and our special gift of anniversary champagne to you after you had deliberately told us, strangers, in advance that was why you were coming to HH. “We are enjoying your lovely home. Your housekeeper has done an awesome job. Everything is neat, clean, & in order. I don’t know if you leave a bottle of champagne for all your guest but with it being our 30th anniversary, it sure made us feel special! Thank you very much.” In spite of all that, you left a 3 star review when nearly all reviews for 13 years, have been stellar 5 stars. So what caused you to become So Unhappy on days 3 and 4 of your anniversary get away? Our next guests, on their 4th stay with us, asked if their drive to HH went more quickly than expected, if they could enter early, drop their luggage since when leaving it in the car when gone from it, there is the serious risk of theft. I told them to leave the cleaner a note if they did so she would understand why there was luggage in the house she had come to clean after a guest exit. They were gone when the cleaner phoned me when at the house with 2 problems: your garbage was not picked up that all guests, yourselves included, are asked to leave able to be picked up by the waste people by leaving open the service yard gate – which did Not happen. Some garbage item inside the service yard was placed blocking that gate from opening which on your side could be seen and moved but the other side saw it as the gate locked since it would not swing open. So leaving garbage where you did, prevented the gate from opening. Rather than leave others’ garbage to greet new guests, I paid her to remove it. So Your carelessness cost Me when our waste people could not access the area. I’d not have mentioned it until you then behaved So Offensively when I phoned. I’m not holding my breath awaiting Your apology. Our cleaner also said her usual drill of checking items had not located the house recreation guest passes. So I phoned you to check where you had left them. I left the cleaner to finish the house in case the passes turned up. When she Later called me, they had not, but suggested since the new guests she could see had changed their clothes, perhaps they had the cards. Bingo! And just as I confirmed she was correct with a phone call to them, you called back and could Not have been more UNpleasant insisting that I should have called you when until That moment there was Nothing positive to report only your leaving the garbage unable to be picked up. Your immediate hyper belligerence and nastiness, I could only terminate by hanging up. Goodness, how do you behave when something Truly serious happens? So through your garbage error, and the temporary disappearance of the passes, suddenly the kindness we had shown to acknowledge your anniversary unbalanced you to review poorly your vacation when you had written to me such praise on day 2. I’m truly sad you had so little to celebrate together that such details became Your focus. And I find your mean spiritedness in lashing out at others who had been helpful and kind, pretty self absorbed. And tiresome. Good luck with that tendency and whatever your rambling complaint was about The Lazy River which kids love along with the splash pads, bridge and slide. Adults are welcome, but it is a kids’ play area. Your complaint about our a/c at 72 not cooling you sufficiently made me laugh. Wouldn’t you be a whole lot cooler – and less unpleasant – if you stopped being sooo angry? Was it your excessive anger that also disabled you from providing the correct THEIR for THERE website and using 9 repetitions of told/said – YAWN! - until you exited into the Deep End making No Sense- micro managing, exactly ???? Doesn’t your stream of consciousness rambling surrounded by so many Happy guest reviews rather illustrate where the Real Problem Behavior lies? Colleen

Once I know a little about our guests' plans and interests, I am able to better advise so they don't miss out on island aspects they would enjoy. Covid appears not to be needing the earlier isolation so the island's best restaurants at the neighborhood's perimeter are a quick bike ride or drive w/o needing to become involved in island traffic. John - When our contract says specifically -plus our email and phone welcomes- tell us right away if something is not right, why did you not mention these things when there was the opportunity to set them straight instead of when back home for 2 weeks? The tv 's were working because I checked with each set of guests since then and they said they see the instructions but haven't needed them. Occasionally a guest changes our tv passcode to their membership where they live w/o telling us and we need to do a reset but that has not happened this summer so far. Even if the instructions there didn't correct a problem, we work with you until it is completed. As for bikes, we leave an air pump, wrenches, and other tools there for minor adjustments to be made for height, handlebars, seat, etc between bookings. Most guests are excited about the fun they had on them. What was your problem with them, basic maintenance being what? Lubrication? There[s even a can of bike oil since after beach biking and washing off the salt, the gear chain needs lubrication. Bikes need maintenance when ridden. Maybe you don't know how to do these few things? Then ask us at the time. How many towels did you need for 5 people, 3 of them kids? Respectfully I suggest if you're not going to engage in communication to solve problems, what 's the point of once home telling me? I work constructively to solve, but need others to work on that WITH me. Make sense? Colleen

Hi Jen + Boys - Not only did you have a good time, I did too since you and your boys were so much fun with your night cameras sending me pictures of deer and opossum in our yard at night. Who would 've known?! The pools, beaches and bike paths accessed from our place win all guests over since they come to be outdoors in the island's beauty and are able to do that easily and often to go to different places. Did you visit inside the Conservancy close by the house just before you turn into the neighborhood? This Mom from NV with 4 kids and no other adult asked a lot of questions before coming about recreation and its proximity. She also commented on how spacious and excellent the house looked in pictures which countless guests have reaffirmed for years. All this and on a huge, private, scenic lot. Yet this woman who came for EXACTLY the features our house offers ignored her check out time Saturday morning and at 10 a:m I received an email – instead of a more immediate earlier phone call or the beep of a text’s arrival - as my cleaner sat in the driveway contacting me that guests were still in the house – that she, the guest, wanted to stay on until after noon even though she well knew new guests were arriving at 4 pm. When I explained why NO had to be my answer, she then Lied to me – which at the time I did not know – but her kids it turns out were still out on our bikes exploring pathways and going to pools – while she assured me she would strip all used beds, do that laundry and remake the beds leaving the cleaner less work to meet her exit time. I agreed on the condition that the bed spreads be left OFF for our cleaner’s verification that the beds were as they needed to be before she completed them. Our cleaner that Saturday had her grandchildren visiting and wanted No Delays naturally in her cleaning time. But yet she was 1.5 hrs delayed as a result of this NV Me Monster stealing her day since she did not complete what she had undertaken in exchange for additional time until 12:15. When I deducted from her deposit the 1.5 hrs cleaning delay our cleaner needed to add to her day, this now Unwanted, Protesting guest showed further her deceitful, selfish character by ranting in her review of too many rules and - the house she refused to leave - being poorly outfitted. Quite obviously there were Too Few Enforced rules on my part since the cleaner and I were both lied to and inconvenienced: that leniency will Not again happen. (Perhaps our house’s decorating not including NV neon, lucite, tinsel and prefab furniture made this guest uncomfortable with our decor?) What Other Rules sent in advance with our contract besides meeting check out time could this Sparks NV (tract housing, small lots, no vegetation, surrounded by desert) woman have been objecting to with her derogatorily laughable reference to Grandma’s house? - No noise from our house that would require neighbors or security to arrive and remove them from staying - Following the posted rules of neighborhood conduct in public at pools for both owners and their guests - Unlocking the service gate for garbage pick up ensuring they left no garbage behind for the new arrivals - Contacting me if there were a problem - Locking the house securely each time they left Since certain basic agreement and civilities are required for smooth functioning guest accommodation, dishonest, disrespectful people such as NV here whose actions revolve solely around Only Their Desires need not enter into worlds where civility prevails which is Beyond Their Capabilities. Grandma wants only reasonable, fair minded guests! Colleen

Hi Cecelia- I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit. We need to have you return to enjoy the bike trails you can access from our corner in either direction to connect with the 10 miles of paved.level paths within the neighborhod and then connect to 60 miles of them all over the island to so many fun places. We have left a map on the kitchen desk of the trail system in the neighborhood where you can ride to the beach, the pool or the ice cream shop. It usually becomes buried under all the restaurant information since everyone who knows HH, knows how wonderful the food choices are. Colleen

What an ill mannered, sad troop you all were within 24 hours of being there having jammed down the garburator at least a dozen egg shells plus the vat of bacon grease that accompanied your first holiday breakfast successfully blocking our sink's drainage with the grease egg shell bomb you built. Had I known then when you phoned Yelling about the sink not draining and the house filling with Stench Your eggs now caused what the plumber days later told me you had all done, I would have kept your security deposit or better cleared you out Fast. He said he had never seen such obvious negligence of a garburator and people so unconcerned at the harm they had caused. That you then tampered with the bdrm sofa, and complained about the house being dirty to the extent our cleaner I sent back in to wipe some crumbs from under a drawer rack while you had two more guests than what our booking contract allows reveals the Cheaters you are. If there's to be no renting here - as You say - after damaging and sneaking in extra bodies - to be happening during covid, why then are we not stopped from doing this? Your clogged arteries from too much bacon grease likely prevented you from being able to think that one through. Plus your other limitations. Week after week, year after year, 5 star reviews appear for this house and its warm welcome. Wreckers like you stealing owners' money for repairs you recklessly caused don't even feel shame. In fact, that's Your idea of Clever. 90 days have passed and no grievances from vrbo for owners with 29 years of 5 star service. And a plumber who witnessed the Truth. How very sad your lives must be finding pleasure in such wrong doing.

Hi Bret - Given you are all beach lovers, what better place to holiday than the beauty of HH with a different beach for every day if you want variety. The proximity from our house to the beaches you chose with free good parking and washrooms are often the ones others also choose. I don't know if you beach biked on the 6 bikes in the garage, but that to us is the best island biking in spite of the 70 + miles of paved, level bike paths all over this island including 10 miles right here in our neighborhood.
