We stayed in the pocket city penthouse. It was quite spacious, with historic charm (gorgeous wood floors), and had a wonderful view of the Mississippi. This place and McGregor in general, are gems for anyone who appreciates history-- and especially those who enjoy a mix of natural beauty and preserved architecture.

Our host was great and checked in during our stay. Description of the home was accurate, rooms were clean, beds were comfy, the kitchen was stocked for our needs. Close to state parks, casino, winery and restaurants. Thank you for a great weekend.

Accommodations were lovely as was the view. Street parking was not a problem. Highly recommend a stay here. The only drawback is the staircase if you have mobility issues and the proximity to the railroad tracks if you are a light sleeper! But honestly, these were not an issue with our stay, just a heads up. This property has other room options and the pictures show a great representation of the space. I may come back just to stay in one of the other options! Hosts are great to work with!!

What a treat, this historic old house. Our third floor apartment was beautifully appointed, comfortable, excellent heating and the kitchen bright and sunny. We appreciated the bottle of wine as a welcome gift and coffee provided for our mornings. The view of the Mississippi was amazing. Only wish we had been able to stay when there were leaves in the trees.

Pocket City Penthouse

My family and I really enjoyed this property and would highly recommend! The location was great, walking distance to the river and downtown shops and restaurants. The penthouse was very nice and clean, a lot of space, and an amazing view. We will definitely be back.

My husband and I made a weekend get away and this was the perfect “temporary home”. The main room was so cozy we woke each morning reading our bibles by the windows and watching the sun rise over the water. The wallpaper and look of the whole place was so unique and takes you back in time. We will be back, and next time with the kids!

Quaint historic penthouse

From a nice stroll on Main Street to the river views, this penthouse was a nice getaway location. Welcoming community with small town shops. The eat in kitchen was well stocked with needed utensils. The bathroom was small but covered our needs. I would recommend this location for 4 people. We enjoyed our weekend escapade.

Relaxing on the River

Our overall experience was more than we expected. The host was very helpful and made us feel very welcome. The property is well maintained and blends a historic sight with modern conveniences. The sunrises are extraordinarily beautiful! It was a great experience and we highly recommend this location.

Girls trip

Great location, lots of space and all that we needed. It would have been nice if the air conditioning had been turned on because it was very hot and took quite some time to cool down. The beds were very uncomfortable

Great time in McGregor Iowa!

A quiet retreat to a small, historic Iowa River town is just the way to kick off the summer! The accommodations at American House are unique yet comfortable with the latest technology. The penthouse offers great river views. Light sleepers may wish to use ear plugs for the 1-2 trains that come through at night, but they were not problematic for us. Great restaurants, bars, shopping and ice cream is all a short walk away.This area of Iowa/Western WI is a hidden gem… good food and breweries, lots of hiking, and tons of history to enjoy within 15 minutes. We highly recommend American House and McGregor and plan to return.

Awesome location in a beautiful place

This is a few miles away from my ancestral home. NE Iowa (the Driftless Area) is an amazing place. We hiked Pikes Peak and Effigy Mounds. Also caught some Rainbows and an 18 inch Brown trout in Yellow Rive State Forest!! McGregor is full of 100-150 year old buildings and they are all clean and beautiful, including this property. We had a wonderful visit and enjoyed the Rental as we were in a modern-like building that was built in 1854. Right out the windows we were looking at the Mississippi (just steps away). We will be back!

More than we expected!

My sisters and I do a sisters weekend every year and we look for unique places to stay all over Wisconsin to really appreciate our lovely state. We chose to travel and meet in McGregor Iowa for a weekend of relaxing, shopping, eating and catching up. This unique apartment in McGregor was one of our most memorable weekends. So much to do and see... we agreed to make plans to come back because we didn't have time to take it all in. Our host was very detailed and the communication was excellent. Thank you so much to Sara for checking on us and providing above and beyond what we needed to have a wonderful get away for 3 sisters. We will be back.

Couldn't Have Been More Pleased

The Pocket City Penthouse looked like a winner when we were hunting out a special place to stay for our anniversary -- and it turns out it was the jackpot! Truly, everything was perfect, from the beautifully appointed apartment and cook's kitchen, to the amazing views -- to the town of McGregor, itself. We loved the little stores and restaurants nearby (those that were open so early in the season), and the surroundings were perfect, the trains, the riverboats, and the green hills with Pikes Peak just up the road for hiking. The proprietor was especially helpful and communicated with us exceptionally. We're looking forward to coming back. Maybe we'll see what McGregor looks like in all the season through the penthouse's big picture windows!

Wonderful historic location. Host provided thoughtful extras that we didnt think to bring. Our only suggestion would be if you prefer a softer mattress I would bring a mattress pad.
