Authentic vieja San Juan

Close enough to the tourist area, but enough distance to not be too crowded, fun authentic roosters, can see the ocean from the roof. Some buildings are being renovated, some in the area are vacant but really interesting to see. The apartment was comfortable and the AC worked well.

The apartment is a little gem. Very accurate to listing but still surprising when seen in person. The view from the terrace is great and it gives an extra space to enjoy the sun (or moon) and the breeze from the ocean.

Alarming smoke detector

We arrived at 2:30 pm. Host permitted early check in. We could hear the smoke detector beeping before we got the door open (it’s hard to open). The smoke detector was at least 10-12 feet high & we couldn’t reach it even by climbing on the furniture. We contacted Vrbo & the property manager. Vrbo could hear the smoke detector. No response from property manager when called by either Vrbo or us. We went out, got a message from the property manager thru the Vrbo app that the problem was fixed. Went back, still beeping. Repeated all calls above, no answer from property manager & a big run around from Vrbo. It’s 5 pm, we can’t sleep w/the alarm. We tell property manager we are checking out. Vrbo tells us we will be getting rebooked, we will be contracted very soon. Nothing from Vrbo until 10 pm asking us for proof of the problem (told them to listen for the alarm on their recorded line). We went to a hotel. We did get our money back within a few days. Vrbo is literally no help & has trained their staff to say they “completely understand” w/o offering any help. The apt is modest but fine, good location by a lovely beach but there is no one to fix even the smallest problem.
