La Tigra was a delightful experience, but one must be prepared to be somewhat isolated. After all, this is an eco-lodge--not a resort or even a hotel. Personally, we loved the "tree fort" feel of our bungalow. Keep in mind that you are basically exposed except for thin tarps, see-through curtains and mosquito netting, so all the sounds of the rain on the tin roof and the forest are surrounding you. Nonetheless, we felt safe and slept soundly. Our bungalow had two light bulbs and one bathroom outlet. So, be prepared to feel like you're "glamping." The architecture of these structures if simply marvelous! It's obvious every effort is made to blend in to the ecology around, even down to the building materials themselves. And everything seems well maintained. But it comes with some sacrifice. You won't have WiFi in your rooms--you'll have to go to the reception area. And your hot water seems dependent on how much sun has recently heated it. Be sure to bring an umbrella, raincoat and we recommend a headlamp for exploring at night. Also, expect to feel a bit isolated. The drive down the mountain is an 8-10 minute effort. You may have to drive a few km to find a tienda or "soda." On the other hand, the food at the lodge is fantastic! If you arrive by car, consider renting an SUV with at least all-wheel drive. We had a small, front-wheel drive car. It made it, but we felt a little overpowered by the rugged terrain. Special thanks to Wendy and Keiry. :)

Staff was wonderful. Only ate breakfast but it was good. Stayed for two nights. The shower didn’t work the second night, no hot water. Grounds weren’t as beautiful as advertised and didn’t see any animals as advertised. Picked this place specifically for that reason. The room itself was clean and not as in the tree tops as the pictures on their website show but we were able to sleep with it wide open which was nice.

Do not miss this! A night in a tree house! It sounded exotic, unique. It sure was! I wish we stayed longer!! You are given a flashlight as this is truly in the rainforrest! Each house is separate from the others, so very quiet. The hammock on the back deck fantastic. There are mosquito nettings for each bed, though we didn't see any mosquitos when we were there. Rain at night sounds heavenly on the roof. So peaceful! You have a great welcome when you arrive, and they are very helpful! And breakfast is wonderful!!! I will absolutely stay again on my next trip to Costa Rica!!!

Such a beautiful place!!! Very peaceful and quite. Delicious food, wonderful staff. I would only request that they improve the living conditions of the chickens they have, that provide the eggs for breakfast every morning. Other than that, great, awesome, wonderful experience. Would definitely recommend.

There was no power and therefore no food, no light, etc. The Management is not prepare for case of emergency relying to one source only. No back up plan - generator, solar panels, wind generator, etc. Lack of power renders the facility totally inhabitable.

Thank you for your comment. Our Lodge is focused on sustainability and ecotourism,Generators Panels and others are big pollutants that we do not want in our mountains. Our main mission is the contact with nature so the candles and others are our great friends, We cook with natural gas and that's why our restaurant service is always available and not dependent on electricity. As a Hotel in Costa Rica we have all the legal permits and that is why we even maintain emergency plans in case of any for real emergencies. We are prepared and have additional plans to always safeguard our safe clients

Stay was wonderful! Wendy went out of her way to make our stay comfortable and helped us greatly with getting reservations for Hanging Bridges tour w guide and coordinating our transportation for the tour with our transportation for our return to Atenas. The nocturnal walk was awesome - what an experience it was to see the landscaping around the lodge come alive- frogs, eggs, snakes etc! We particularly enjoyed the presentation but Adolfo about how La Tigra came to be and their conservation efforts. Planting our trees was a highlight and we were lucky spotting many different birds including toucans on our early morning walk! Food was outstanding, delicious and beautifully presented. Loved the rustic setting. The only little drawback was that it was cloudy all day and rained some so low on hot water for shower. The positives however far outweighed the negatives so we are giving it an overall 5!

Disappointing Noises
Wonderful to be in the middle of a forest but conversations from neighbors on both sides of our lodging could be heard even after 10:25PM. I ended up checking the time because the conversation and occasional loud laughters from the right side of our tent kept going from the evening into the night. Their noise made it difficult to enjoy the serenity of being in the forest, and to fall asleep . Also a bit disappointed that not many wildlife seem to have been around. Without the noises that people made, the forest was relatively quiet, especially at night — no loud calls from insects, frogs, birds, etc.

Good now, and sure to get better!
The rooms are unique, with open fronts at tree canopy level. Relax, you can screen them in if you want. This really gets you to experience the sounds of the night! We went on the frog tour with Adolpho. He found us many individuals out of four species of frogs. Food was fresh, nutritious, and good by lodge standards. Yes, you’ll get beans and rice with every meal. But we also got thick homemade tortillas, salads that changed every day, and portions last seen in the U.S. Midwest. The nice thing is that their forest is new... in future years the wildlife will be more common and more diverse. As it were, we did have three parrot species, toucans, and a magnificent Rufous Motmot come to the feeders.

This was the most amazing "hotel" experience. Only stayed one night but planed my literary around this hotel. The sounds of the forest at night are very peaceful. Breakfast was amazing. Trails to a jungle stream and toucans feeding in the trees when you wake up. Best hotel of the five I stayed at in CR. About a 30 minute drive to La Fortuna.

Your ticket to a world beyond
Why on earth did I not find this place earlier ! This piece of paradise is a cut above the other routine hotels. It is rustic, earthy and all natural! It is absolutely your ticket to being one with nature in a non pretencious way. The cabins are very private and far from one another with their own little paths leading upto them. They are constructed out of local wood, everything from the door knobs to the pegs , from the beds to the chairs and tables ... evoked appreciation and wonderment. Loved it all. Especially the cool showerhead! Slept looking at the stars , listening to the crickets and our cabin was even visited by a glow worm!!! The breakfast was absolutely delicious and so was the dinner. The staff, Fernando at the reception especially were gracious and welcoming! Was very impressed with their forest conservation efforts and joined others in doing my bit to further this great effort! I loved this hotel and will definitely come back to stay longer.

Waking up in a rainforest
I feel that most of the money spent on the stay went towards breakfast which was incredibly delightful! The beds were comfortable, the view beautiful and staff extra helpful! We were arriving late and they assisted every step of the way - they left us key, map and 2 flashlights to find our way. Definitely use WAZE to find the location if relying on GPS. It was somewhat romantic to sleep with mosquito nets overs beds :)

Great Rainforest Experience
La Tigra is a really cool rainforest lodge. The rooms are overlooking the rainforest and you feel like you're in the canopy. The overall experience is fantastic; starting with your host Kinder who is friendly and super knowledgeable. The food is well-prepared and tasty. Breakfast is included for free and there are a good amount of options for lunch / dinner. There are some great hiking trails around the property and you really feel like you are immersed in the rainforest.

Before you go you should know what you are getting into. The accommodations at the lodge are pretty basic. One outlet in the bathroom to charge up electronics. No A/C, ceiling fans, or really warm water. Having said that, the rooms were comfortable and clean, with a spectacular view. We ate all our meals at the lodge. The food was very well prepared and quite reasonable. Our host made sure we were well taken care of.

Amazing experience deep within the jungle
This place exceeded my expectations. Yes, its a simple hotel, nothing fancy or luxurious, but with every basic need covered. The property is amazing, has a lot of trails you can go to and feel surrounded by nature. The property is so big, most of the times you won't hear another guest while you explore the trails. Is just you and nature. The beds were nice, big bathroom, no hot water, but also not super cold (they sort of heat the water a little with a solar system so it doesnt feel so cold.) The food is simple traditional costarrican cuisine but very very tasty. The staff is really nice. If you can, plant a tree with them! they have a reforesting project right on site.

Beautiful, secluded oasis
Beautiful secluded location. The treehouses are amazing and very minimal - we loved sleeping out in the open air and the staff was very helpful and more than willing to accommodate us. Food from the restaurant was amazing. We brought our own drinks for in the room and the staff easily supplied us with ice and glasses upon request. Wish we had time to stay longer and explore the trails!

Great experience
We checked in to the lodge quickly and easily. They walked us to our lodge and gave us two flashlights to use for our stay. The room was clean looking and no bugs but had tiny spaces in the floor where bugs could possibly get in. The bathroom seemed clean but just had cement with an old paint job for the floor and walls so it looked slightly dirty. It definitely felt like more of a fancy camping experience than a hotel in the rainforest. There was a sheer curtain for one wall and a net to go around the beds which we ticked in to make sure nothing got in at night. We didn't have any bug scares at night while sleeping so that was good. Two of the walls were a plastic canvas that had a really strong smell of mildew from the days and nights in the damp rainforest. There were many long private trails that even crossed a little stream a couple times. It was the only place in Costa Rica that we saw the red and blue poison dart frogs in the wild. We probably saw about 10 on our hike. There are toucan birds in the area and sometimes come up to feed near the lobby/eating area. They have an amazing set up to attract the red eye tree frogs and many other frogs and toads. We asked him about the frogs and he helped us find many different frogs and animals at night. There isn't anything else nearby but the food was good, service was great, had a lot of birds and other wildlife to see, and was an amazing experience sleeping in the rainforest listening to the frogs croak and crickets chirp.

Incredible Jungle Experience
#1 - this review is for an Eco-Lodge type environment, and so that's how I'm rating it. This is not a luxury hotel, although the staff made it feel like one! An incredible experience, and you need to keep in mind that the lodges are buildings completely open to the environment built almost entirely out of locally harvested timber. We were well cared from the minute we arrived, the lodge was clean and had a great location peering into the jungle. At night we felt as if we were comfortably sleeping in the jungle itself, with all the noises of the jungle but none of the bugs or other nasties. All in all thoroughly recommended, if you're comfortable in a tent and don't require a luxurious room this is perfect.

Lovely getaway in the rainforest.
We spent 3 nights at La Tigra and were charmed by the wonderful project this is. Fred was so accomodating, knowledgeable and available. The dining room outdoors is great fun with a view of the rainforest and nightly poison frogs and daily butterflies. The cook is outstanding and will prepare special orders for you upon request. Very reasonable food prices. We ate two meals a day there and sometimes with beer or wine. The treehouses are close to the dining room so even on the day it rained a lot we were not uncomfortable. Usually they have warm water due to solar heating but occasionally you will have a cold shower. The trails are lovely and nicely maintained. We would stay there again.

Cozy in the jungle
A lovely place but hard to access and explore around if you don't have a car. I had requested information from the hotel prior but did not receive any responses so we learnt a lot the hard and somewhat expensive way. Next time, will definitely rent a 4X4. On site everything was great with minor inconveniences.
