8 Mile House-Experience California Tranquility at this Historical Ranch Home!

When you stay at the 8 Mile House, you will enjoy a sense of old California serenity with all of the modern comforts you could want, including four historically themed guest rooms, a scenic covered porch and a large outdoor patio, dining table and barbecue. The standalone party barn is great for watching the game, serving up drinks and hanging out! Elements of the original 19th-century structure are found in nearly every aspect of the property, while apple trees, pomegranate, persimmon trees and grapevines provide a timeless ambiance that is rooted in the ranch’s agricultural heritage. The home sits on 3 acres, surrounded by hiking and biking trails located 5 minutes away.

Built by the Bean brothers in 1877, this home is exactly eight miles from the mission town of San Luis Obispo—a meaningful distance at the time of its creation. Located at the north base of the steep Cuesta Grade on the original El Camino Real, the home was used as a hotel for travelers making their way up or down the grade. The travelers could park their heavily loaded wagons, seek overnight lodging and even rent extra teams of horses for their journey across the grade.

Today, the 8 Mile House stands as a testament to Santa Margarita Ranch's tradition of “early California rancho hospitality.” Originally settled by Franciscan missionaries in the late 1700s, Santa Margarita Ranch is still one of California’s oldest continuously operated cattle ranches—and is today best known as the home of Ancient Peaks Winery.

The 8 Mile House ultimately reflects a love of history and a joy in sharing the ranch with others—a passion that is evident in all of the little details that make this place so special.
Located less than 20 minutes from Shell or Avila Beach, and Santa Margarita Lake (a great fishing spot), 5 minutes from wine tasting/zip ling and only 15 minutes from Downtown San Luis Obispo.

Enjoyed wine tasting in the area as well as a great escape room in Santa Margarita. Wonderful accommodations. Clean, well maintained, and comfortable. Nice patio area for grilling and back porch for gathering.

Very Unique and Special Property
We really enjoyed everything about this property. It is off the 101, and you can hear the highway, but the house and grounds are so special that it wasn’t an issue. Remodeled beautifully for a historic home. Lots of character.

a week at a VRBO
We had a very nice time at this property. There were only two issues that was a concern, First turning off the highway and getting back on the highway was a little concerning. It seemed a little dangerous. The other problem was they advertized a washer and dryer and we were counting on those because there were 8 of us getting ready for our sons wedding. and we had a lot of clothes that needed unwrinkeled. The dryer did not work at all. they said that they ordered a knew one, so they knew it was broke but never metioned it, They did allow us to use the other units dryer but it was very inconvenient , down the way a bit.

A hideaway in heaven
This home was perfect for our family. The house is clean and beautiful inside and out. We had plenty of space to enjoy out time together. The beds were extremely comfortable and the amenities were excellent! The property is relaxing, serene, and calming. We loved watching the peacocks, bobcat, and a few chipmunks roaming the land. Checking in and out was a smooth and easy process. Communication from management was superb! We highly recommend the 8 mile house. We will definitely reserve this home for future stays in the area. Thank you again for a perfect weekend!

Beautiful house!
I booked this property for my sister’s low key wine themed bachelorette party and it was the perfect place for us to celebrate. The house was clean, beautiful, and fully stocked with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Everyone kept commenting on how great the house was! One of our favorite parts was how clearly we could see the night stars. We also loved all the wildlife surrounding us. (Horses, peacocks, turkeys, etc.) The pictures are indicative of exactly what you can expect from the property! The only thing we had a small issue with was that the address took us to the wrong side of the freeway and we ended up on someone else’s property. If the property managers could update the address or supply easier directions, it would help future guests. We found the property by using the GPS coordinates left in a review by a previous guest which was helpful! For anyone needing to find it - the property can be located right off the Northbound side of the 101. If your GPS is telling you it is located on the southbound side, that is incorrect and you’ll have to turn around.

Must Read This Review!
We truly enjoyed our stay at the 8 mile house. The grounds were beautifully kept although we didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy the lovely outdoor dining area. We were greeted by peacocks and blue jays everyday! The home is exactly as pictured, pristinely clean and spacious! We had senior citizens, young parents and small kiddos. We were all comfortable and happy! We never cooked but there were plenty of cookware and dishes. We brought our own keurig but a coffee maker is provided. I was super grateful for towels, toilet paper and paper towel. We’ve stayed at places that didn’t take into account that we paid for eight people to stay so we need enough of those things! Also super grateful for washer dryer. Our kiddos played hard in clothes and we were able to do a load of laundry! Beds were comfortable, this is huge for us! When on vacation we want a clean comfy bed and 8 mile delivered!! Bathrooms were so clean, hot water aplenty. We brought our own but shampoo conditioner and soap was provided. Property management was easy to get ahold of, and they reached out before we arrived to make sure we understood the check in process. We had a wedding and all the events that go with it in SLO and we were maybe 15 min from our destinations. The two things that kept us from giving all five stars in every area were the noise of the highway and the difficulty in finding the property. The highway is loud, if we sat on the back porch of the house that faces the highway (although you can’t see it as it’s lined with beautiful trees) we couldn’t hear each other for a visit and coffe on the porch. When first arriving, we entered the address provided using “Old Highway” in the iPhone map and it lead us to a different spot. Also, the pin showed in VRBO shows the property further north than it actually is. We had to call management and eventually used US Highway in Google maps. It was dangerous for our caravan. I’d suggest getting a mile marker from the owner to find it. It’s a highway where cars are going at least 60 mph and the entrance is fairly tight and comes up quick. It feels like you’re turning onto a driveway from a highway, not an exit off the highway. No way would an RV make it. I’d also ask for road signs to look for to give your driver a heads up. Once we’d found it, we saved a pin making it much easier, we’d end up getting onto the shoulder to slow enough to make the turn and feel safe. We would highly recommend this property and hope to return!
