  • Designed by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer, construction of the house began in 1860. Construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and finally completed around 1868 by the new owner, John Wilder. Before Hansford's death, as retold in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house had already been the scene of two deaths. In 1913, a previous owner tripped over the second floor banister, fractured his hip, and suffered a concussion, dying three days later. In 1964, a boy chasing pigeons on the roof fell over the edge and impaled himself on the iron fence below.

Last minute trip to Savannah. Location was great. Street parking wasn’t too bad. Close to grocery store. It’s cute and quaint. The two ottomans next to the couch were a nice touch. We used the kitchen and everything was clean and in order. The bed was fairly comfortable. The shower was a nice size for larger/taller people. I think our only complaint was the TVs were pretty small. Thank you for hosting us!

Very nice place, but lacking a few key things that kept us from rating it 5 stars. First, Wifi was so weak as to be almost useless. (It was not our phones - we both have almost-new iPhone 17's ...). Second, no TV ... unless you like old shows. No Smart TV, no way to watch sports. Third (and I know this is a matter of preference, but ...), bed was extremely soft, and not good if you appreciate good back support. Other than that, place was conveniently located, very clean, good communication from host, easy street parking, etc. No other complaints.

Our room was comfortable, the perfect size for our long weekend visiting our daughter in Savannah. Everything was clean and check in went smoothly. We appreciated the very detailed information package on the coffee table with suggestions for dining and activities. Overall, good experience and would book again.

We loved the location and the shared garden space for relaxing after a day of exploring. Easy to get around, great coffee shop and super close to grocery store. The bed could use a new mattress as it was really uncomfortable. The TV’s are really small- I would suggest replacing the living room one to be larger and a smart tv as well. Overall we loved our stay

Location is great! Free on street parking is a real plus. Had some difficulty opening the alley gate but eventually got it. Apartment was clean and tidy, there was coffee and filters provided. Sadly, none of the furniture was comfortable. Mattress and pillows were very tired, padding on every chair and foot rest was gone. Internet was very slow, TV's had two different streaming services with no instructions. Light over the stove needs replaced and the light in the fan/light in the living area does not work.

Very cute and private. There is a very cute coffee shop three doors down, Mate Factor. The apartment was very comfortable. Not very far from downtown Savannah. In cooler weather, it would be slightly over a two mile walk. We used Uber because it was very hot and humid. Very quick ride. A lot of parking available downtown if you want to drive. Great street parking in front of the property.
