An amazing find
Such a cute spot to stay. Surry, Maine is a quiet small town and our VRBO was nestled in a small cluster of homes right up against Contention Cove. Two minute walk to the beach, all the necessary amenities will definitely make this a place to come back to!

Perfect!

Rustic cozy get away
I was there for a month. The weather was chilly and rainy for my first week and a half so I had to rely on the space heater. The rest of the time the box fans helped with the humidity. A split system AC/ heat pump would be helpful, especially if you have allergies, as I do. The cottage had pretty much all one would need and help was available if needed.

Peaceful getaway in the Maine woods
Oh, how we loved this cabin! We have stayed at rental cabins all around the U.S. and this is one of the very best and a new favorite! We never met our hosts in person (which is fine), but we felt very well taken care of because the house is so welcoming, clean, and well stocked with everything we could possibly have needed during our week-long stay. We appreciated the super easy check-in/check-out process, the generous supplies provided by the host, and the incredible, private, charming location. The cabin is tucked away in a cute hillside, wooded neighborhood in Contention Cove and was easy to find with GPS. We loved every single detail about the cabin; it’s so charming and homey. We had our dog with us, and enjoyed walking along the quiet gravel roads in the neighborhood and down to the beach. (The path is well-maintained but a little steep for folks who are not so steady on their feet; just take it slow. My 80-year-old mother made it down there, just going very carefully and using a walking stick for extra balance.) It was easy to open up several windows in the cabin for some fresh forest air at night and we did not have any problem sleeping comfortably without air-conditioning. The shower was hot, the beds were comfortable, and the full kitchen was well-stocked. Pretty much, everything was perfect about our stay. The only problem was that we eventually had to leave! :) Thank you kindly to the Caddoo family for sharing this wonderful family summer home with us!

Cozy Cabin
We loved this cabin. It was a rustic, simple, quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of sightseeing. We would go all day touring and then come back and relax in this quiet atmosphere. It was very clean and accommodating. The host even brought us some farm fresh eggs.

Perfect Getaway!
My family was visiting Maine for the first time and Hobby Horse was the perfect location for our getaway. We enjoyed our time at the cabin just as much as being out. The beach access was fun to explore at low tide. The whole place was plenty big for the theee of us. We had windows opened at night as it was warm during the way, but with fans we slept great. The pictures don't do this listing justice, it's is very quaint and nice!

Cozy Cabin
What a great stay! Cabin had a rustic feel with nice modern amenities like wifi full fridge and small gas stove/oven. It was Very neat and clean. The property had a gas grill and picinic table out front. Easy access to main road and only 15 min to Walmart and 30-45 to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who would like a quiet place to escape to after exploring all this area has to offer!

The dreamiest cottage ever
This is the second time we stayed at the Hobby Horse and we will definitely come back. The location is A+ with access to a beautiful private beach. The cottage has a lot of character with plenty of towels, a fully equipped kitchen, and wonderful hang out spots (our favorite is breakfast on the porch). Highly highly recommended.

Great place, clean. Located within 30 minutes to Acadia National Park.
We had a great time at Hobby Horse house. The added great room is nice and comfortable. Kitchen is stocked and clean appliances. Used the box fans to cool bedroom’s. Access to the beach to launch our Kayak is great, we left our kayak on the beach without any issues.. Dog friendly a bid plus, she also had a great time. Thanks for your attention to detail.

Wonderful cabin
The cabin is very cozy and clean. It is really well-maintained. Everything you need is there. The only not-very-pleasant experience was meeting the owner. We were late checking out. It was totally my fault because I thought it was at 11am (but it was at 10am) and the owner was a bit rude about that. May be she was in a bad mood this morning. Otherwise, we had a fabulous stay!

The hosts of Hobby Horse have equipped the cabin with everything you need and then some. It is very comfortable, homey and clean. It is centrally located for sightseeing trips throughout the area and tucked away for much needed peace and quiet. Highly recommend this cabin for your vacation.

This cottage was very clean and had everything you could need. It was a 30 mile drive to Acadia National park which we drove every day. A short walk down the path to the ocean each night to watch the sunset.

Hobby Horse Review
We loved the charming cabin, the short walk to the beach, the quiet, and the proximity to Acadia and Bar Harbor. Despite the hot weather, the cabin stayed cool. The bedrooms were very well furnished and the master bed itself was really comfy- firm mattress which was great for my back. All in all, this was a wonderful getaway for a relaxing vacation. Rustic Cabin Getaway
My sister, roommate, and I loved our stay at Hobby Horse! It was a great location for visiting Acadia, Bar Harbor, and Castine. We all loved walking the quiet beach in the evenings. We were able to observe sea stars, crabs, snails, and hermit crabs along the shore! The kitchen was also well stocked with everything we needed for simple meals. Cheri was very communicative throughout the process.

Beautiful house!
This was a beautiful house, I do not think the pictures do it justice! We had a beautiful stay with a quick little walk to the beach. The house has everything you could need for a little get away! Amazing time!

Review
Very clean, nice location, kitchen was well supplied for cooking family meals. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Only drawback was an extremely worn out bed. Woke up to a sore back every day. Would have given 5 stars overall if not for that.

Perfect homey cabin
We loved the cabin during our 7 days staying here. Pictures don’t do the place justice, as it’s much more homey and cozy than it looks. Place was perfect for having 2 kids, they got their own room. The cabin itself is like stepping back in time, everything feels vintage in a great way. We were able to walk to the water, and look for shells during low tide. Only a few little things to note when booking. It is a drive to get to Acadia/Bar Harbor (30-45min). We didn’t mind, and basically just went out to Acadia once a day, and crashed when we got back. There’s no heating or AC. Was not a problem for us, since the weather was perfect for open windows, but something to be aware of. The master bed is very soft, which was fine for me, but terrible for my wife with a bad back. Everything else was perfect and beyond our expectations, especially considering the price. We would definitely stay here again!

Thank you for sharing your stay at Hobby Horse. You seemed to enjoy our beautiful Downeast area. We appreciate your comment on the bed not being comfortable for everyone. We replaced the mattress with a new firmer one.

Third Time Back!
Once again, the Hobby Horse met and exceeded our expectations. We lucked out with perfect weather, including a long rain storm during the week, where we experienced the sound of rain on the metal roof! So neat. My partner and I cannot express enough gratitude for the soft touches the cabin provides, along with the solitude of Surry. We can't wait to return.

Perfect home base for vacationing in the area
Great little spot that puts you close to Acadia, Deer Isle, Castine and Bangor. While it is not water front it does have access to a lovely private beach. The house is quite rustic but has all you need for a home base. The hosts were very responsive. It was just my husband and But would be great, economical spot for a young family.

Cozy cabin
The cabin was very cozy and comfortable. We felt at home immediately. It was decorated with charm and character. The cabin was secluded and quiet while being within 10 min of shopping and restaurants. We had an issue one night and one of the owners was there within 10 minutes to help out. The wifi worked great. It was great to be able to bring my pets with me on vacation, so I didn't have to worry while away. The cabin is actually much cuter than the pictures show. This was the best rental I have gotten on vbro. Overall a great place to stay with very helpful owners. I would definitely rent again.

Great stay
So much character in this cabin. Good amount of space for people to separate. Bathroom clearly has recent update without losing charm. Everything you could need in the kitchen. Felt secluded while still having neighbors near. Cute little walk way to water. Reasonable drive into town, and to Bar Harbour and Acadia. Thanks for the experience!

Exactly what we were expecting, a cozy cabin away from busy areas.
Hobby horse is a cozy cabin in the woods with a short walk to a private beach. The location is away from the tourist area but a short drive to Acadia a.park and Bass Harbour, which is what we wanted. The cabin has all essentials needed. Despite a few dreary days we enjoyed our stay!

Sweetest getaway ever!
I immediately loved the house as soon as I pulled into the driveway. Inside was exactly as described and I felt VERY comfortable and happy right away! A lovely neighbor across the way came over one day to say “Hi!” and we had a long, wonderful conversation! She shared some great spots to take my dogs (as she has two herself)! All of this and being so close to Acadia/Ellsworth and Blue Hill 100% sealed the deal for us!!! We will definitely be returning next summer!!! 😊

Perfect Return to Surry and Acadia
This was the second visit to the Hobby Horse and it was even better than the first. The property manager and owner have been easily accessible during times when there have been any questions or concerns. Much to our surprise, there were also things, such as the new fridge and television or the outdoor grill which made home meals more exciting, that added to the charm and experience of the little cabin. This home away from home is perfectly fitted in a private neighborhood and away from hustle and bustle of small tourist towns, but is close enough to Acadia, shops, Perry's lobster shack and Pugnuts, that you can do it all in one day easily. The bedding is cozy, the bathroom provides great hot water, the kitchen is fully stocked, and the living space is just right for enjoying ģames and a meal in the window space. Although it got cooler at night, the heaters were enough to keep it cozy until the next day. We're very grateful to have made it back, and look forward to our next visit!

What a Find!
Three weeks in paradise. This is a wonderful property that has lots of funky charm and a great management team. We had a terrific stay and enjoyed both the way this traditional Maine camp is laid out inside but the way it sits on the lot. Easy access in and out and a nice walk downhill to the rocky beach. We loved this area so much that we're hoping to move to Surry. Can't recommend "Hobby Horse" enough.

Possibly Maine's best kept secret?
I hesitated a lot before writing this review because part of me did not want other people to know. This secluded rustic cabin was our perfect getaway for 5 days this September, just absolutely perfect! The photos and description do not do it justice. The cabin is located in a central location for what we wanted to explore in Maine: Acadia, Deer Isle, and Camden. It sits on a private road and has access to a gorgeous private beach. My partner and I spent an entire day alone on the beach, swimming, drinking, playing with rocks, dancing; it was one of our most memorable days of this year. One reviewer said it was far? That is not true; its a 3 min hike to the water on a perfect little bay. Recommendations in the guest book were all spot on! Definitely get some crab meat from Josie's store in Ellsworth; we ending up bringing a bunch back with us to NYC. We loved sitting on the porch in the mornings enjoying breakfast and in the evenings, star gazing. The provided Citronella candles were more than sufficient to keep mosquitos at bay. The host was kind enough to provide us with a grill which we used for most of our dinners. The kitchen is fully stocked for all your cooking needs, including a lobster pot. The cabin on the inside is huge, a lot bigger than the photos reveal. We would come back with another friend or 2 no doubt. It is rustic, but very tasteful. WIFI works perfectly fine. Shower has great water pressure. We brought our own bed linens with us; I would recommend the same because the ones there could use an upgrade. All in all, this was a wonderful experience and we cant wait to come back next summer for a longer period of time.

Great Ocean Cabin!
Great location. It’s not exactly waterfront but the owner also owned the neighboring house which does have a private beach and you have access to that. I talked to the owner and he was really nice. He told us that we could use his kayaks and stuff. The beach is rocky and has some seaweed, but is great for swimming. I liked to swim out to the floating boat platform and jump off. Other than that the location is great, quick drive to the National Park and 10 minutes away from a cute town with a lot of good food options. The place itself is old (it’s a converted blacksmith shop) and a felt a little spooky. We read the review by someone who said they say a spirit of someone who died there, and between that and the general oldness of the house gave us some freaky nightmares. The new addition is a great spot to read, there are huge windows that let the sun in, and the couch is super comfortable. Check out Property was great, location very nice with good access to a saltwater Cove. Close to Ellsworth and Acadia. Only comment was that owner stop by at 9:30 On the morning we left for no apparent reason which was a little odd.

Cute cabin in a great location to visit Mt. Desert Island and surrounding coastal communities.
This is our kind of lodging, rustic with amenities. Beautiful location on Contention Cove away from the craziness of tourism, but close enough to everything we needed. Cabin was well stocked with the basics. Since there is no central heat, only space heaters, we did wake to some cold mornings, with temps in the low 40s. I would definitely stay again if in the area.

Perfect, Peaceful, and Private
This quiet cabin is filled with plenty of rustic charm, and met our needs perfectly! The water’s edge was a short walk away where we launched our kayaks in the cove and paddled for several hours at a time. It is conveniently located for visits to Deer Isle, MDI, antiques and lobster dinners. You won’t find luxury, but you will find simple pleasures such as clean and welcoming facilities in a peaceful, private setting.
