Escape to an Idyllic Countryside Couple's Retreat

  • Tucked away in the Devon countryside, Pippin is a beautifully restored oak barn offering peace, privacy and breathtaking valley views. Perfect for couples or quiet escapes, this charming retreat features a cosy open-plan living space, wood-burning stove, mezzanine bedroom and a private enclosed garden. Wake to birdsong, enjoy slow mornings with coffee overlooking the fields, and unwind in a setting where nature and tranquillity take centre stage. Children can’t be accommodated due to the pond.

Here at Your Devon Escape we are on hand to assist with any queries or questions.

This countryside retreat offers a lot to explore on the doorstep. There are several local walks to enjoy from the property (don’t forget your wellies). Or if you want to explore further afield, head up to Dartmoor National Park or onto the South West Coast Path.

The local pub is just a couple of miles away in Moreleigh, with a convenience shop and local fuel garage nearby. The towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe are a twenty-minute drive away. These beautiful coastal towns are the perfect day out; indulge on local seafood and wander the cobbled streets.

Nearby beaches, Bantham, Burgh Island and Blackpool Sands, are nine- and ten-mile drive respectively. Much-loved by locals and visitors alike with lifeguards during the summer months and a selection of amenities, they are perfect for a trip to the seaside.

The farm itself is over a thousand years old. At dusk and dawn, keep an eye out for deer in the steep fields and barn owls that occasionally nest in the cider barn. During the summer months, buzzards’ nest in the valley and dozens of swallows that swoop through fields before having a good natter on the telegraph line.

Originally, Pippin was where the apples and machinery were stored. Opposite is the cider barn, which was used to house a very large apple crusher and press to make cider and stable the farm horses. If you’re here in autumn, you’re welcome to help yourself to the apples and blackberries that fall from the trees.

    The entire property.

    Why you’ll love staying here:

    - Peaceful rural setting with far-reaching countryside views
    - Beautifully restored barn full of character and charm
    - Cosy wood-burning stove for relaxing evenings in
    - Light-filled open-plan living with floor-to-ceiling windows
    - Mezzanine bedroom
    - Private enclosed garden ideal for morning coffee or sunset drinks
    - Surrounded by wildlife, woodland and scenic walking routes
    - Perfect for romantic breaks, anniversaries or digital detox escapes
    - Local Pub and convince store - 5 minute drive away

Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, celebrating a special occasion, or simply craving time to slow down, Pippin offers a beautifully peaceful countryside hideaway. Thoughtfully restored and full of character, this charming barn sleeps up to four guests and is perfectly suited to couples or those seeking a restorative rural break.

Inside, the open-plan living space feels calm and welcoming, flooded with natural light and framed by far-reaching valley views. Comfortable sofas invite you to unwind, while the well-equipped kitchen, complete with microwave, 4 ring induction hob and combination airfryer oven makes it easy to prepare relaxed meals using local Devon produce. In the cooler months, the wood-burning stove becomes the heart of the home, creating a wonderfully cosy setting for evenings spent reading, chatting, or simply enjoying the stillness.

Up on the mezzanine level, the bedroom features a comfortable king size bed and looks out across the living space and the rolling countryside beyond. A sofa bed is also available if required at an additional charge, offering flexible accommodation for additional guests when arranged in advance.

Step outside through the French doors and into your private enclosed garden, a tranquil spot where mornings begin with coffee and countryside views, and evenings end to the sound of birdsong drifting from the nearby woods. The natural pond beside the property, fed by a woodland stream, attracts herons, ducks and the occasional kingfisher, adding to the sense of being truly immersed in nature.

Surrounded by 100 acres of organic rolling fields, woodland walks and open skies, Pippin is a place to reconnect, recharge and enjoy life at a gentler pace. Whether you spend your days exploring the Devon countryside or simply soaking up the peace and quiet, this is a rural retreat designed to leave you feeling refreshed and restored.

The nearest train station is Totnes which is approximately 9 miles away.

    Private parking for one car.

    Children:
Sadly no children accepted to the close proximity of the pond.

    Occupancy:

    Please Note:

6/10 Soddisfacente

Nice cottage, great owners, poor cleaning

The cottage itself is quite nice, albeit small. Beware that you will not be able to stand upright in the kitchen area if you're 1.90m or taller. The furniture looks nice though is partially a bit old (the sofa is quite worn, and the table is a bit shaky). The location is lovely and very quiet - in some nights, you can hear and with some luck even see owls, and the swallows from the neighbouring barn are adorable. On two occasions during our 2.5 week stay, a group of motocross bikers went across the property but did so slowly and thus not overly loudly, and were gone quickly. Obviously, the location comes with the caveat that getting anywhere will require a car and time (best case to Totnes are 22 minutes, anywhere on the coast 30 minutes, Dartmoor 30 minutes +) but that is to be expected if you're going rural. The owners were absolutely wonderful! They welcomed us warmly, reacted quickly to any issues, gave us helpful hints where to visit, and were always up for a chat if desired. They are probably the best part of the experience! Unfortunately, the cottage was only half-clean when we arrived. The kitchen was clean apart from some spider webs in the cabinets; the bathroom was mostly clean but the shower not so much, as the hose seemed not to be part of the cleaning routine; lots of spider webs could be found in the whole cottage; and when moving anything from its usual place, it became clear that this was not done while cleaning. The spiders will return if you stay longer than just a few days - it is rural, after all. But given the cleaning fee, I think one can expect an actually clean cottage when arriving. The agency did give us a partial refund of the cleaning fee after we asked for some compensation and we received a mid-stay sheet and towel change (which makes sense for a 2.5 week stay). Overall: If you love a quiet holiday, and don't mind a few spiders, go for it.
