It was a beautiful property and I would have rated it much higher except for the communication with the host. At 1:15 am the smoke alarm went off and started loudly saying "FIRE, FIRE". It then started chirping and continued to chirp all night. I was wearing ear plugs and was able to sleep through the chirping, but my husband was up all night. At 8 am, we left a voicemail for the host, texted him, and left him a message. There was no reply from him until a couple hours later when I got a standard message asking us how our first night went. My husband was not able to reach the smoke detector to remove it, even standing on a chair. Luckily, our friends who were staying at their parents' condo nearby brought us a ladder so we were able to disable it. At that point, I emailed the host again to say the problem was taken care of. Since we had our dog with us and were going to be leaving him when we went out, we didn't want someone coming over when we weren't there. The only response I received was "thank you". No apologies for the inconvenience it caused. If our friends had not brought over the ladder, it would have continued chirping and we wouldn't have been able to stay there. My poor husband was exhausted the next day since he had been up all night. We were only staying 2 nights to see our friends who were in town, so it really put a damper on our short visit. It's unfortunate because it was a nice home and backyard. It really is important to have a responsive host.
