Pine Mountain Lake is a gated Sierra foothills community just 45 minutes from Yosemite National Park, and a world away from the city.
At the heart of the community is a private lake with three sandy beaches, a floating swim dock, volleyball, and kayak, paddleboard, and boat rentals at the Main Marina, plus a lively lakeside café serving snacks, milkshakes, and our favorite pineapple soft-serve.
A local tip: on summer weekends (guest parking is roadside or park at Lake Lodge and catch the free water taxi to the Main Marina a scenic ride that's half the fun of a lake day.
Lake Lodge Beach itself, closest to the house, has a quieter swim area, BBQs, and a playground right on the sand, ideal for younger kids. Inside the gates, you'll also find an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, an equestrian center, a seasonal pool complex (open May–October, guest hours from noon), and miles of forested trails.
Down the hill in historic Groveland (10 minutes away), California Gold Country charm is alive and well. Grab sandwiches at Mar-Val, coffee in the garden at Mountain Sage, craft beer at Around The Horn Brewing, wood-fired pizza at Two Guys, or a drink at the Iron Door Saloon, the oldest continuously operating saloon in California. The Grill at the PML golf course serves excellent seared ahi and steaks with beautiful fairway views. Reservations are a must.
Beyond Groveland, the region is full of family adventures. Yosemite is 45 minutes away for Lower Yosemite Falls, Mirror Lake, and the giant sequoias at Mariposa Grove. On the road to Yosemite, cool off at Rainbow Pool, hike to Carlon Falls, or step into the 1850s at Columbia State Historic Park with stagecoach rides and gold panning. Ride a real steam train at Railtown 1897 in Jamestown, or head to Murphy's — the "Little Napa of the Foothills" — for wine tasting, music, and a walkable main street.
