The Neighborhood: In Islington, it’s very much a case of North meets East London! A variety of cool hangouts await, from jazz clubs and upmarket cinemas, to the hip and picturesque shopping streets of Camden Passage and Exmouth Market. Once overlooked, improved appearances and infrastructure brought about by the 2012 Olympics have seen this neighbourhood soar in popularity. Although it is only 10 minutes from the centre of the Capital and is now home to a good smattering of chains, Islington has managed to maintain its neighbourhood character, as well as the individuality of many of its shops, bars and restaurants. Its well-established theatres and arts venues have gone from strength to strength, and continue to showcase the best of British drama, dance, and art.
The area’s proximity to large green spaces like Highbury Fields and long stretches of Regent’s Canal, make finding free things to do in Islington no problem. The 8.6 miles of the Regent’s Canal transports you to an oasis that feels miles away from the city. Walkers, dog walkers, cyclists, joggers, boaters and paddle boarders can all be found along the tranquil waterways that exist in parallel with scenic walkways, gardens and waterside eateries.
A perfect lunchtime hub, Exmouth Market is a charming collection of independent shops, restaurants, and cafés. Its semi-pedestrianised layout instils that delightful feeling of wandering or dining along a European street.

Getting Around: Tube: Angel Tube station is on the Bank branch of the Northern Line. Its Zone 1 location means it’s only five minutes to Bank and seven to London Bridge. Highbury & Islington station is in Zone 2 and a journey to Oxford Circus takes seven minutes on the Victoria Line, while the Overground connects to Clapham Junction, New Cross, Canada Water, Shoreditch and Stratford.
You’ll also find easy access to Victoria and Oxford Street, connecting north and south London via the Victoria tube line from Highbury & Islington station.
Overground: There are several train lines which operate from Highbury & Islington station, including trains to Hampstead Heath, Canada Water (change for access to Canary Wharf), Shoreditch High Street and more…
Trains: A commuter train run by Thameslink Great Northern links to Old Street and Moorgate on weekdays. You’ll also find Greater Anglia trains running from Essex Road station.
Buses: Islington is well served by buses, with 19 routes connecting through Angel. These include the 4 (to Waterloo), 214 (to Highgate Village), and 38 (to Victoria). There are also several night buses.
Cycle: Cyclists love living in Islington as it is relatively flat and offers straightforward routes to the City and the West End. Angel has several Boris Bike docking stations.
