If you are traveling to the Açores (Azores), I highly recommend a stop on Pico Island. The unique landscape of volcanic rock, historical vineyards, and Mount Pico jutting out of the center of the island are breathtaking. You can stay on the island, or if you prefer, you can stay in Horta on Faial Island and take the ferry across for the day. Here, we captured the pinks of the sunset reflecting on Mount Pico as we pulled out of the ferry station in Madalena, headed back to Horta. #InStone #VolcanicRock #MountPico #Azores

This is a photo of the Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyards UNESCO World Heritage site. Here and in a few other areas of the island, you’ll see the land divided up into small rectangular plots by piles of black basalt (volcanic rock formed by lava), a centuries-old practice. These walls protect the vines from the strong ocean winds and salt water spray as well as warm the grapes. Vineyards literally #InStone . #volcanic #PicoIsland #Azores #historicvineyards

Just south of Madalena on Pico Island is the Criação Velha wine region. We turned off the main road onto a narrow road with dry basalt stone walls guarding vines on either side. It led out to the coastline where old lava patches meet the ocean and overlook Faial Island. The late afternoon sun rays made the landscape glisten and I had a strong urge to work on a (my own?!) vineyard here some day. Similar to a few other areas of the island, the land is divided up into small rectangular plots by piles of volcanic rock (basalt). It's a centuries-old practice to protect the vines from the strong ocean winds and salt water spray as well as warm the grapes. Vineyards literally #InStone . #volcanic #PicoIsland #Azores #vineyards

Struttura nuova molto bella. La ns. stanza era praticamente un mono-locale con un bel bagno spazioso. Bella la piscina: forse sarebbero da incrementare i lettini a disposizione. Carina anche la zona spa-piscina interna; anche qui forse qualche lettino in più non farebbe male. buona la colazione.

La città è orribile. Sport Azores per il whale watching è ottimo. Il ristorante di Mercado Bio è molto buono.

Portugal's highest mountain! Mt. Pico in Azores Islandsl! Pico Island was my last day in the Azores and it was my only day there. A great way to end my March 2019 trip. This majestic volcano is 2,351 m (7,713 ft) above sea level, and is one of the highest Atlantic mountains; it is more than twice the elevation of any other peak in the Azores. And there are breathtaking views from all across the small volcanic island. I got many good shots of it, including this one. I took a tour around some parts of the island, before flying out of the Azores that day. It was a really great way to end this trip! And this being one of the best spots to see the volcano. It's an idyllic lake view! There was even some birds in the water :). Also, Pico doesn't have nearly as many tourists as the main Azores island. Which makes this all the more peaceful. And in the tradition of the Portuguese poet, Raul Brandão, Pico is referred to as the Ilha Preta ("Black Island"), for its black volcanic earth, responsible for its UNESCO-designated historical vineyards that allowed the development of the island. If anyone goes to the Azores I really recommend a stay on Pico!
