Just a 4 minute walk to the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, Unit #70 has a premier view of the coast point and the ocean splashing against the lava rock and waters teeming with sea turtles. The front entrance and bedroom face views of the hills and mountains that are home to macadamia nut farms and coffee plantations. This remote area is truly magical, away from the bustling crowds of tourists; a retreat where you can rest and relax or go on an adventure!

We named our unit Pog's Place after a sweet little gecko who visits our outdoor lanai for a tiny treat of Passion, Orange, Guava juice.

The Space

This is a spacious true one bedroom unit that sleeps up to four people with a Cal King in the bedroom and a full size sofa sleeper in the living area. The unit entrance and bedroom face the mountain views; you will wake to the gentle call of doves on this side of the unit. The large bathroom is freshly painted and has original artwork on the walls. It has a tub and shower, equipped with body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. Our brand new on demand water heater gets hot water to you quickly! The guest closet has lots of extra bed linens, pillows and towels. The bedroom and bathroom are both on the entrance level. Then up a short flight of travertine steps is the open floor plan living room, full-size kitchen, and dining area all under a high vaulted ceiling which allows for a bright, airy space with great views from the large second floor lanai. Since this unit is located on the upper level of the building, there are no worries about noise above you. The full size kitchen has a peek through bar with beautiful new hardwood stools where you can relax and unwind with your favorite beverage. It has all you will need for cooking during your visit including some fun new items; a rice cooker and NutriBullet. It also houses your own stacked washer/dryer with supplies of detergent and dryer sheets. The living room has a comfortable seating area with a 48” flat screen TV above the bar, high speed internet, Apple TV, and cable. It also houses the full size, sofa sleeper with brand new mattress topper and bedding. The dining area has seating for four and is immediately adjacent to the kitchen. Just out the sliding doors you’ll find the second floor covered lanai which is very spacious at 6’ x 20’. It is wonderful for sunrise breakfast/coffee, sunset dinners, and star gazing at night; a great place to read a book in the upholstered lounge chair, or relax with a glass of wine and visit the resident geckoes, Pog and Gop. They work hard to keep down the bugs for us all, and are welcome residents.

This unit has new travertine floors and professional custom upholstery throughout. It is a very well-stocked unit with all the comforts of home. A short walk through the beautifully landscaped resort will bring you to the pool, hot tub, small Koi pond, restrooms with outdoor showers, gas bbq grills, and ice machine. Relax in the sun and enjoy the ocean and golf course views.

Where You’ll Be

Pahala, Hawaii, United States

Colony One at Sea Mountain Resort is very serene and perfect for those who want to experience true Hawaiian heritage. Located on the South end of the Big Island, this condo is 60 minutes from Hilo; 90 minutes from Kona; and 25 minutes from Volcano National Park. The two closest towns are Na’alehu (7 miles South) and Pahala (5 miles to the North).

It's a 4 minute walk to the world famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, where you can swim/snorkel with the endangered hawksbill and green turtles which bask on the beach all day long. Grab our Tommy Bahama chairs, beach mats/towels, and snorkel gear, and enjoy a full day there. Nov-Feb are prime months to see humpback whales breaching out on the horizon! Take the trail down the beach to the many protected lagoons and see the historical sites, or head up the hill and check out the old Hoku Loa church and cemetery. Nearby and short drives from the resort are Papakolea Beach (one of the only green sand beaches in the world), Kulakai Cavern, South Point Cliffs, and Kilauea Volcano. The green sand beach is close to Oceanview and a 3 mile hike from the parking lot, or you can pay the locals to take you down in a four wheel drive, and bring you back up again. Kulakai Cavern is also close to Oceanview, and offers guided tours of the volcanically formed caverns. Kilauea has been active year round in Volcano National Park. There are also ancient lava lakes you can hike and the Thurston Lava Tube to explore. Check out Miranda’s Farms for coffee tasting and Ka’u Coffee Mill to see the farm itself and take a tour of the beautiful uplands of the Ka’u district. Last but not least, the Punalu’u Bake Shop located in Na’alehu features freshly made, ever popular Malasadas (Portuguese donuts)  with local flavours like Lilikoi, that can be sampled and enjoyed while lounging in their gardens. They also have a fun gift shop and other food. In town there are also a few restaurants and coffee houses, as well as the farmers market on Wed and Sat.

Ka’u has some of the most untouched landscapes in all of Hawaii, perfect for rejuvenating the body and soul.

Important to Know

You'll want to stop for groceries and drinks along the way as there are few options in the area. Kailua-Kona and Hilo both have KTA Supermarkets, Target and other big stores; Kailua-Kona also has Costco. The local grocery store in Pahala, Mizuno's Superette, is small and relatively expensive with limited hours but has a friendly staff and has been there for generations.

Most guests rent vehicles at Hilo or Kailua-Kona airports as public transportation is very limited here. Parking on-site is free. You can get a parking pass from the resort manager. Instructions will be in your unit.

There is no ac/heat in the unit. Temps are always 65-85 degrees; ceiling fans and cross breezes keep the air moving and it’s quite nice.

Quiet hours are from 9pm to 8am. There is no smoking in the unit or on the lanai. There are designated smoking areas with nice picnic tables.

The space is for up to four people. No parties. No pets allowed in the resort except certified registered service dogs, please let us know in advance.

The golf course is currently closed (pending new ownership) but is kept maintained. There is a golf course nearby in Discovery Harbor.

Beautiful place with great proximity to Volcanoes National Park!

The house was beautiful and location was ideal for visiting Volcanoes National Park and black sand beach. Only knock we have was the shower water temperature never got very warm. While it wasn’t cold, it wasn’t ideal either. Otherwise 5 stars!
