Having been to the ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre, we also wanted to take in a concert at the incredible Mariinsky Concert Hall. It is acoustically one of the best concert venues in the world and is fairly unique in that the orchestra are surrounded on all sides by the audience. The exterior looks very uninspiring, but inside is made completely from wood. The previous concert hall was destroyed by fire in 2003 and the new interior was finished in 2007. Prices are very inexpensive by western standards.

The Mariinsky Theatre is known as one of the best venues for ballet and opera in the world. The audience will be made up of a complete cross-section of society from little girls in their best dresses, with parents in the tuxedos and bow tie, through to tourists in their jeans and polo shirts. The inside of the building is stunning, very traditional and old-school. It's worth paying the 150 roubles to hire the binoculars, as it allows you to skip the queue to the cloakrooms when you return them. The chairs aren't the most comfortable though. You shouldn't visit St Petersburg without a trip to see something here - it's such a part of the cultural heritage of the city.

Also known as Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, dedicated to this venerated icon. It was modeled upon the St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican. It is located on the main road of St. Petersburg, the Nevsky Boulevard.

The former city square of the Old Russian Empire, this square its famous for holding the 1905 Bloody Sunday and the 1917 October Revolution. A massive square just in front of the Hermitage Museum, its a popular destination where carriages, skaters and tourists mix up. The statue in the middle is the Alexander Column, a 50 meters tall column thats unique of its kind. This enormous column was placed in the middle of Palace square to celebrate the victory of Russia over Napoleonic France. Unlike its ancient predecessors, at the top of the column there was not a statue of the respective emperor at the time
