This historic 1927 hunting lodge on Lieutenant’s Island transforms into pure magic in the fall. Once a gathering spot for migratory bird hunters, the island is now part of the Audubon Society’s Wellfleet Bay Sanctuary—a haven of peace, birdsong, and glowing marshland. Crossing the bridge feels like entering another world: the winding causeway framed by salt grasses, the call of gulls overhead, and the quiet rhythm of tides revealing their secrets with the season.
Perched on a bluff overlooking the bay, Lieutenant’s Lodge offers front-row seats to nature’s grandest show—each sunset painting the horizon in amber and rose. From your wide porch or just steps down to the sandy beach below, you can watch the sky melt into the water and the salt marshes turn gold in the late-day light.
Inside, the home embraces its rustic roots with warmth and character. Once a 1930s hunting lodge, it now welcomes guests with the charm of old Cape Cod—wood beams, vintage details, and rooms that feel wrapped in history. The first floor includes a full kitchen, dining room, cozy living space, master bedroom and bath, plus a sunny sleeping porch with two twin daybeds. Upstairs, an antique staircase leads to the king bedroom overlooking the bay, a half bath, and two additional queen bedrooms tucked under the eaves.
Outside, autumn unfolds beautifully on the wraparound porch with a view that defies words. Savor a warm drink by the grill, spot herons gliding across the tidal flats, or launch a kayak straight from Hidden Beach for a calm paddle through crimson-tinted reeds. Fall here is quieter, slower, more intimate—the Cape the locals love best.

Tide Note: The island’s bridge may briefly cover with water at tides over 10 feet—a natural rhythm of island life. Locals simply wait 30–45 minutes for the tide to recede. Never drive through salt water; just enjoy the pause—it’s part of the adventure.

Tides are the rise and fall of ocean water levels that happen every day. They’re caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on Earth’s oceans. The moon’s pull is stronger because it’s closer, and it causes water to bulge out on the side of Earth facing the moon and also on the opposite side.
As Earth rotates, different areas move into these bulges, which is why we get two high tides and two low tides each day. It’s like the ocean is following the moon’s lead in a giant, watery dance.
Please check a tide chart for Wellfleet Harbor (in your guidebook) so that you can plan accordingly.
