Sheep Camp - Steel and Wool Rustic Hideaway

Steel and Wool Sheep Camp is snuggled into the oak brush on the "back 40" of our property beside a livestock pond full of goldfish. After a short walk down a graveled trail—pulling your belongings in a wagon or carrying them in a backpack (both provided)—you’ll arrive at your unique retreat: a quonset hut (the steel) and a classic sheep wagon (the wool).

Here, you’ll find everything you need to enjoy true peace and privacy, which is so abundant here. Listen to the gentle rhythm of water trickling from the feature and into the pond, the soft chorus of birds and crickets, and, most memorably, the rare sound of silence, space, and complete tranquility. There’s so much room at Sheep Camp to breathe, reset, and reconnect!

Arrive early to prepare dinner in the outdoor kitchen, then take a short hike up the trail to watch the sunset over Plateau Valley. End your evening beside the pond, feeding the fish and gazing up at a sky full of stars, or gathered around the fire pit sharing stories.

Sheep Camp is walk-in only, which we think is part of the adventure, but as such, we recommend you arrive before dark.

You’ll drive past our garage on a well-graveled road, park your vehicle at the end of the field, and load your belongings into the wagon we provide. It's a short walk (220 yards, less than 5 minutes) up a wide graveled trail to the Sheep Camp. Just bring a change of clothes and your food; we'll provide all the other “camp” essentials.

We've divided the quonset hut in half. The back half features a master bedroom with queen-size bed, roll-up floor mattress, dresser, and a cabinet full of extra blankets and towels. The front half features a covered outdoor farm-style kitchen and dining area, fully stocked with drinkable water, mini fridge, BBQ and cookstove, pots and pans, and plates and silverware.

The sheep wagon features a small bench for sitting or sleeping, twin bunk beds, and a small wood stove for chilly nights. The bench is a bit narrow, so it’s best suited for a small child. The bottom bunk features a tri-fold twin mattress that can be configured to suit your needs. A child might enjoy sleeping beneath the top bunk for a cozy, “cave-like” experience, while an adult would probably prefer laying the mattress out on the floor between the benches for more headroom. The top bunk is standard twin size and comfortable for guests of all ages.

Sheep Camp can comfortably accommodate 5 people, but we don’t recommend this camp for young children because of the nearby open water.

A short walk away is the outdoor bathroom facility, which includes a pit toilet and a solar outdoor showering system. Please bring a pair of water shoes if you'd like to try the outdoor shower. We provide towels, soap, and shampoo.

Sheep Camp has no internet, electricity, or running water, but it does have a propane wall heater in the master bedroom, wood stove in the sheep wagon, solar lights throughout camp, and a solar-powered charging station for your electronics. We also provide a propane fire pit, an assortment of indoor and outdoor games, and a grove of hammocks. Several hiking trails begin right at camp, and a short walk away are stunning views of the Plateau Valley.

We get good cell service and a data connection on T-mobile from the Sheep Camp. In addition, high speed internet is available at the Sunroom, a short walk or drive north of the parking area.

At the Sunroom, which is the enclosed porch on the front of our house, we offer coffee and simple snacks/ breakfast items, an assortment of cold drinks and water, and high-speed wi-fi. It's all self-serve and available anytime during daylight hours.

Your rate includes snacks and drinks in the Sunroom, as well as a standard one-hour cleaning service. If additional cleaning is needed after checkout — such as for excessive dirty dishes, trash left outside, pet hair on bedding, or extra large parties resulting in additional laundry — an additional cleaning fee of $25 per hour may apply to cover the extra time and workload required.

We also kindly ask that you accurately include your total guest count and any pets in your reservation details, as this helps us plan for cleaning after your stay. Additional charges may be assessed after checkout for undisclosed guests or pets.

We welcome a house trained and well behaved pet (maximum 1) who likes to sleep in their own bed on the floor and gets along well with other dogs. We provide pet bowls and sheets; please bring your own pet bed, food, and other supplies. A pet fee of $15 applies.

During the summer, you can access the Sheep Camp parking area in a 2-wheel drive car, but the roads to our property, and into Sheep Camp, can get bumpy or muddy quickly. We recommend driving a vehicle with 4-wheel drive in late fall to early spring as the weather can be unpredictable. If you aren't sure, please ask us about the current conditions of the road.

We will send you a reservation confirmation message shortly after you book your stay, and we will send you another message either the day before or the day of your arrival. If you make your reservation through Expedia, please check your VRBO account and/or email for our messages. Sometimes these messages go to your junk mail, so please check your spam folder too if you haven't heard from us!
