Wooden stilt houses in the Gulf of Mexico just offshore at the mouth of the Pithlachascotee River. Theses havens from the mainland have a rich history dating back about 90 years, and with only nine left their rebuilding after storms makes them symbols of perseverance. They have been havens to fishermen, summer homes, fishing camps, weekend getaways. Johnny Cash owned a home along the river leading to the stilt houses and often blew off steam at Des Little’s "camp," as the locals call them.
OMG ! This smelled so bad !! Make sure to ask the Captain to approach from UPWIND if possible. Seriously... It just about sent a few of us "chumming" over the side-rail and I have a pretty strong constitution. Since the 1940s, Weeki Wachee Springs has featured mermaids performing for audiences in the underwater theater. The park also features educational shows about native Florida wildlife and a boat ride on the river created by the springs. It was once a privately run amusement park, one of the first big tourist attractions in Florida, and is now run by the state of Florida as a state park.

On a short vacation to visit family my boyfriend and I drove through the dying light, sunburnt and tired, until we found a place to eat. Climbing out of the car we saw this view from the parking lot of Ukulele Brand's restaurant. We were able to sit outside on a dock that had fans blowing and keeping us cool despite the humid air. It seems, at least at this location (maybe state wide?) that you can smoke outside but with the fans it didn't bother me (I am allergic to cigarette smoke). There was a live (great!) band and while the service was a little slow, the food was great. If you are looking to relax and not rush through a meal, this is definitely the place to go. We sipped on drinks, dined on delicious food, and enjoyed the sunset while live music played -- the perfect end to a beach day.
