INFORMATION BY A LOCAL, HOW TO ENJOY LIDO DI VENEZIA:
SAND AND SPRITZ ... CIN CIN !
If I could tell you to bring your bike to Venice? Would you believe me? Yes, you can arrive at Lido di Venezia by car, by ferryboat and simply drive away on this long island full of life, excellent restaurants and tranquility. You can also fly to Venice, take a water taxi (motoscafo), and feel like a movie star as you arrive with glamour and admire Venezia's sights. Or you can be a local, take the vaporetto as I do, and in 40 minutes you will be immersed in another world. Is this Venice? Yes, you are in Venice, the real Venetian address. A few cars, many bikes, romantic canals, small bars inviting you for just one more ombra (a veneto word for drink). Lido is a quick vaporetto ride from San Marco Square - one of the most beautiful squares on earth - but a world away from the hoards of tourists and street vendors who take it over each year. The residential island becomes a refuge for visitors, offering them a chance to relax in the Adriatic and mingle with the locals. Lido's gentle hub-bub ramps up during aperitivo hour, when Venetians flock to the bars for a glass of prosecco or a classic spritz and some cicchetti. Every year, in September, the world's greatest actors pass through this island during the world-famous Venice Film Festival. A parade of stars, films and masterpieces on the big screen has accompanied this island's name for more than seventy years! You will be able to wander around the island riding your bicycle feeling like you have left the busy world behind. In fact, Lido is best explored by bike, with facilities dotted around the island and plenty of rental shops.
Venetians live on the beach. It is a lifestyle. Stay in the center or drive to Alberoni for the sun and dunes.
The Lido is the Venetian beach. It is where all the doc Venetians spent every summer as children, and, truly, where most will have had their first kiss.
One of the best beaches in the Lido is Murazzi. With its white sand, it's paradise! You will find so many Venetians there, with their spritz, lying in the sun. It is the place I adore the most. In front of Gran Viale is another dazzling beach, right in the center of Lido. Surrounded by kiosks, music and life, you will know you are on holiday for sure. Take a drive, and head to Alberoni. With its unique wild feel, dunes and stunning landscape, it inspired Luchino Visconti to film part of his film Death in Venice. Stop at Macondo or Acquarius to eat and mingle with the locals. During the weekends, you will only find true venetians there. They often have one capanna in the center of the Lido and another at Alberoni Beach. Do not ask me why, but one capanna is simply not enough for them, and the summer is too short. They need to be transported again. Alberoni is great for kite surfing. Another pearl worth mentioning, in a peaceful setting, is La Gazette Restaurant. It is situated between Malamocco and Alberoni, and it is simply sublime. As you drive back to Lido, find a scenic spot and picture the sunset. The Venetian sunset, to me, is the most beautiful in the world.
Food with Extra Stars Those who appreciate the architectural beauty of the early 1900s are attracted to the Liberty Villa palazzetto that houses Trattoria Andri. I recommend making a reservation for the beautiful covered terrace. Luca, the owner, is truly magical. An artist, a chef, a real Venetian. I adore this place so much! All the jugs and glasses are from Murano glass masters. Check it out all the artists on the wall, that like you, made to Lido.
Da Enzo is simply superb, the food is outstanding. Looking for an osteria? Fish and genuine food at Al Mercà have been part of our lives for ever.
Break the heat, easy food at the little kiosks from noon until late at night:
There are many open-air kiosks on Lido di Venezia's beach. Light lunch or dinner. Enjoying street food in these adorable, charming places that make me dream of Central and South America, for their simplicity. Having fun without spending much. Simple but honest food. You can dress casually as you like, and feel like you are in an entirely different land. Well the Venetians are famous for transporting you to another world! Just like Marco Polo, you can be adventurous and try all the specialties at these kiosks. Feel the sea and the wind gently touching your face. It is truly a dream. Travel to London, eat inside a bus at El Pecador, where you can get their finest bite: Spiegami: their specialty, which means: let me explain! So many to choose from: Nel Chiringuito, Kiosk Lungomare and Canton the Beach are truly loved by Venetians, and Il Bahiano for tequila and rhum.
Cappuccino Aperitivi and Beer à GoGo, and a Gelato to go: Drop by the Blue Drop for cocktails or kill the heat with a variety of beers at Beer Planet, along with choices of cicchetti and music. Maletti has been there forever. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, dinner, or aperitivo. What else? Pasticeria Garbisa , for everything and yes, for an aperitivo. Tired of drinking? Well, the list continues: Il Canton for being with the real Venetians returning home from work. Another spritz in your hands, while some of you may feel like shopping down the road. Give yourself a lift of taste and style, and have a drink at Ausonia Hungaria Hotel or Hotel Excelsior. Magiche Gelato tells you all, so walk around the Gran Viale and admire how close you are to Venice. What is the difference here? You have a true local experience.
Drive to Golf or row your boat, Eat Fish, finally immerse yourself in Sunset Skies The Lido offers numerous sports facilities, including a golf club. This challenging course, built in 1928 and enlarged to 18 holes in 1951, is situated near the Alberoni nature reserve. It has a pleasant restaurant and bar for non-golfers. Immerse yourself in the great rowing tradition of our lagoon by taking a rowing lesson or even go for a sunset excursion with the legendary Bepi Fongher, the 'King of the Remo'. Drive to Malamocco for good fish. It was the home of Hugo Pratt, the author of Corto Maltese, a book character that all Venetians adore. Corto Maltese's adventures were often set in Malamocco. Not to be missed was Hugo Pratt's favourite place, a Trattoria da Scarso like those of yesteryear famous for its honest food. The cartoonist was very attached to this place. This restaurant was Corto Maltese's destination, where the line remained “Scarso, Scarso, the show is ready for Corto Maltese!”,Taken from l'Angelo della finestra d'Oriente, one of the artist's Venetian stories. Try the fritto misto at Al Ponte di Borgo ( da Mauretto )- is undoubtedly the finest fish restaurant you will find. Day trips from Lido Center, a different way to visit Venezia and the islands DO Go to Venezia in the evening for an aperitivo, stay for dinner. Remember you are just 10 minutes away by vaporetto. Select the finest restaurants from my list, book at least six months ahead. At night, Venezia belongs to the Venetians, so you can enjoy its quietness as most tourists have left, giving you the opportunity to live this romantic place in peace. Consider stopping for a final drink at Hotel Danieli, just opposite the vaporetto stop to Lido. A very stylish hotel, a wonderful piano bar, and a drink or two will make you feel special, and will look Venice in a totally different way. Would you forget this experience? I bet you won’t. So run, you may miss the boat! The Lido is the ideal starting point to discover the northern archipelago islands. So put your hat on, visit all the other islands, and return home like a local by catching the vaporetto. This includes Torcello, home of Locanda Cipriani, and where the first Venetians settled. Murano for glasses and Burano, to admire the colours of all the small houses. These houses were painted in strong colours, for fisherman to return home during deep fog nights. Right next door of Burano is Mazorbo island for the famous Venissa Restaurant.
Those seeking an intimate place out of time will fall in love with San Francesco del Deserto, where the Assisi saint passed through in 1220. Inhabited by the Friars Minor since 1230, it is open for guided tours, but you can stay a few days to meditate (by prior arrangement tel. 041 5286863 - www.sanfrancescodeldeserto.it). San Francesco del Deserto is not connected by public transport, so before arriving in Lido, organize your trip to this peaceful island.
Visit the island of Sant'Erasmo, the vegetable garden island that supplies Venice with fruit and vegetables. A bicycle is ideal for exploring this secret garden. You can spend the whole day along a flat route of about 16 km, amidst vineyards and orchards.
