Staff were all fine. Reception area bright and clean. Elsewhere the hotel building appeared tired / worn, with some frayed carpet, creaking floorboards and scuffed doors. Bar closed at 2200 - I checked in just after this time and would have liked to sit with a pint (room service was offered until 2230, but a lonely beer on my own in my room did not appeal! Headed into town to find a pub instead).
Breakfast ok but the cooked breakfast was a bit greasy (especially the hash browns and bacon). Again, not terrible by any means, but it didn’t feel like the luxury hotel offering that Marriott used to feel like. I appreciate some of these issues are due to the old, historic buildings, but things like the bar hours or breakfast quality are - unfortunately- being surpassed by Premier Inn or Radisson Blu, both nearby hotels we use occasionally .
