Farm Cottage’s name goes a long way to painting a picture of it: one of a clutch of traditional Northumberland stone cottages set amidst rural land outside the village of Cheswick, it’s every inch a welcoming refuge from the rugged landscape that envelops it.
A wood-burner warms the cosy open-plan sitting and dining room, the original fireplace topped by a section of an ancient pew salvaged from nearby Scremerston Church, while the lush front and rear gardens offer uninterrupted views of the surrounding fields.
Footpaths criss-cross the fields, encouraging walkers to set off directly from the cottage, which also sits a few paces off the Coast & Castles Cycle route, inviting cyclists to tackle all, or just sections of, the scenic 192-mile stretch between Newcastle and Edinburgh. Golfers will meanwhile discover Goswick Golf Club a mere five minutes’ drive away.
However, Farm Cottage’s greatest draw is arguably the fact that it’s located less than ten minutes’ walk from one of the finest beaches in northern England, Cheswick Sands. This acclaimed beach, a seemingly endless expanse of white sand dotted with black basalt rock-pools and backed by dunes, offers hard-to-beat panoramic views and serves as a playground for families, dog walkers, kite-surfers and sand-yachters. Take a stroll along the sands on a clear day and you’ll be able to look north, past the spires and lighthouse of Berwick-upon-Tweed, all the way to the Border before turning to glimpse the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to the south.
Best of all, you don’t even have to amble down to the beach from Farm Cottage to soak up the views: you can gaze upon the ocean as you sip sundowners on the terrace and contemplate the Holy Island over breakfast in bed in the master bedroom.
Farm Cottage’s owners have styled the cottage immaculately, achieving contemporary yet welcoming interiors that echo (rather than shout) its seaside setting with timber panelled bathrooms, framed seascapes in the bedrooms and local scenes by landscape artist Scott Robertson in the sitting room.
