There was an overall shock when we first checked in because we had just spent the previous 5 nights at the Ritz St. Thomas and there was obviously a striking contrast in quality of the rooms (price difference too obviously...), so we were a little taken aback.
It wasn't obvious to us when booking that there were rooms with AC, and open-air rooms without AC. This makes a huge difference when it's 90 degrees outside, mosquitoes are everywhere, and neighbors are making a ton of noise until 2am. On the second night we switched to a room with AC and plastic covering over the screen windows, and we were much more comfortable.
The staff (family run) was great, so it was just a combination of a friendly environment in a beautiful setting and feeling like your practically camping. The staff was gracious enough to upgrade our rooms when we asked. The food at the restaurant was very good with good portions, though a little pricey. It certainly felt like a remote location, as Virgin Gorda in general is remote (low population, few paved roads, rare internet, etc.), but the hotel accentuated that. After a few nights we got used to it and came to like it, but there is an adjustment period.
