If you fly into San Jose, Costa Rica, and have time for a day trip, the Arenal Volcano and the attractions around it are worth the time. There is also a volcano near Turrialba that has been active lately, which is a little closer, but has none of the attractions. I have friends who live in the Turrialba area who have faced some uncertain days recently.
